i thought you used the soil to dig the hole... native soil ..

why would you fill a bag with POTTING MEDIA... and then put it in the ground ..

or perhaps.. you have left out some facts???

Dig the hole and put the dirt from the hole in the spin out bag? Ok, that sounds good, but what if that's not enough soil?

I mixed half soil and half compost in the bags I used. It worked well. Might as well put the good stuff in the bag since the tree roots can't get it.

With too much compost in that bag, watch that plant that it does not sink when the compost composts. I improve native soils with some compost too. Bernd

why did you reject mother earth for pots .. and now are reversing course... simply space???

i know it was a tree issue....

but what i cant recall.. is whether it was a clay issue also ...

we could be talking at cross purposes.. if we arent clear on this ...

if you dig a hole in a clay cauldron ... which would translate into poor drainage ... too much water ... and lack of air to the roots...

and then on top of that... throw in a media that increases water retention ... it sounds like a recipe for root rots.. etc ...

and whether you know all this.. i offer it for newbs.. to insure they think it all out ...

I'm using the Spin Out bags for a few reasons. One is because of the Maple tree roots and having over 100 hostas in pots is too much work. No soil issues here, thank goodness.

The other reason is to make up for some mistakes I made. One was planting Lilly of the Valley. One of areas I'm planting in has both Maple Tree roots and Lilly of the Valley. I don't want to accidentally get a small piece of LOV into the Spin Out bag, hence the need for virgin soil.

I've redone this section of the garden three times already, and I think I've learned from my mistakes. Hopefully the fourth time will work. I have this vision of hostas with Sweet Woodruff surrounding them (to hide the tops of the Spin Out bags).
