Some summers I think I have too many worms. They make the soil so loose that some plants are unearthed and also makes it easier for the moles and voles to make their tunnels. Having said that, yes, a correct amount of them is good for the soil

I think that having earthworms in your soil is a fantastic sign you are doing things correctly. I am also glad to see that there is someone else that is using the Epsoma products for their hostas. I have been using the Bio-Tone, which is the main ingredient of Plant-Tone. I do believe that the alfalfa meal that is in it is what is attracting the worms the most. I actually dug a hole back behind the pavillion out by the pond and mixed in a good amount of alfalfa meal so that there are always worms available whenever anyone wants to go fishing. When I was repotting this spring I ran into a ton of worms that had made their way up into the pots.

Isn't it amazing how quickly they show up?? I garden on rock-hard-when-dry, sticky-when-wet clay...in unworked areas the worms are few and shrimpy. When we bought the house 2 years ago, I turned the sod over where I wanted beds, then laid down cardboard, then topped it with about 5-8 inches of my home-mixed raised bed soil. By the end of one summer, there were loads of worms...fat dark ones in every handful. The soil is so friable in those spots now! Wahoo!
