The darker the hosta the more chlorophyll it has in the leaves. Since S&S is light it has less chlorophyll and it will grow far better with 1/2 day of sun or more and could even do well in full sun in a Northern, lower, zone say 6 or lower to be safe.

My zone 5 S&S are in the sun all morning and in late afternoon. As long as they get protection from mid day sun and enough water, yours should be fine. (The farther south you live, the more shade they'll need.)

SS is full sun.. without a doubt ... provided you can give it enough water ... maybe not in the deep south ... and i dont know how WV rates in that regard ...

its the exception to jonny's rule ... perhaps due to the thickness of the leather like leaves ... as compared to many yellows that are thin leafed ...

they even grow on the driveway ...

I have S&S in sun until 11:30 a.m. and it occasionally burns. It really depends on where you live. I'm in WA state-East County Vancouver.

Mine is now in a spot where it gets full sun until about 11:00 and then dappled shade until about 2:00

It does much better here then when I had it in full sun, better color larger leaves.

It's not quite as dense as it was in the sun, but the overall appearance is much better.

My S&S is one of very few planted in the ground. The bed is by the driveway on the street side which faces west.

As the sun progressively moves further northwest to the longest day of the year (about 3 more weeks when summer begins), the S&S gets more exposure to the sun, but it is all in the later afternoon. That is intense, but I water the driveway hosta more than the others, unless there is a rain event. I might have to adjust S&S location a bit, bringing it more sun earlier in the day. I watch it closely, since in the ground is an experiment for me--every hosta NOT in this bed is in a POT. S&S got too big for a pot, and seemed to suffer because of it.
