Blue Dolphin

I first saw this plant as a specimen in a convention garden in 2011. The garden in which I saw it was a display for a nursery and that nursery sold out of all the Blue Dolphin plants that day. I didn't get one. A few years later I found one and planted it.

Here it is from this morning.

In only it's second year it's already outgrowing the large space in which it was planted. It looks to me like an aqua-blue version of Sum and Substance. It has those tall flower scapes that you see on S&S or on Nigresens types. I had no luck with using it as a pollen or pod parent last year, but I will try again this year. This one really should be grown much more than it is.

Ooooooh, I have that one on order, but haven't received it yet. I'm a sucker for the blues and I really like that unique aqua blue that some hostas have. How does the color compare to Blue Hawaii, if you have one? Thanks for sharing that pic--gorgeous!

Hi Steve,

Bought one from Hallson Gardens a couple weeks ago. Still just a couple of big blue pips, but yours looks great. Looking forward to seeing it leaf out.

Steve, that is a lovely blue big hosta. You say it is a S&S sort of plant, and that says a lot. I trust your judgement with plants, you sure can pick some winners.

One I'm waiting to see from your garden this year is Beet Salad. When it gets leafed out, would you mind pretty please giving it a thread? With pictures? I'd appreciate it a lot. One of many you grow to perfection.

Below is the picture I took from the Convention Garden. It was at Hosta Amour, Cheryl Cravino's garden in New Hampshire. You can see from this picture that it's really a more aqua-blue than a powder blue like Blue Hawaii or Fragrant Blue. This picture was taken at about the end of June. Notice the scapes. It's flowering a little earlier than S&S, but it's the same kind of tall thick scapes and has the same kind of infloresence. This leads me to guess that it's probably a S&S and Sieboldiana or Tokudama cross.

Mocc, my Beet Salad did not overwinter well and looks crappy this Spring, as it diminished in size. I need to get this plant into the ground.

BTW, I just checked and Hallson's has Blue Dolphin still in stock for $10. What a bargain.
