Building A Dream in the Country

Adapted from a Facebook post by Don Dean.

The upshot is that there is going to be a special Hosta Auction, with plants for everyone, at all price points, on the Hosta Library, starting on Saturday, May 18th. I am donating a plant and you can too. Just contact your favorite online nursery and tell them you want to make a donation to this auction. You can contact Reldon Ramsey, or Don Dean or me and I'll be glad to pass on the information. And don't forget to bid on your favorite plants. It's a most worthy cause.

TARGET: INDEPENDENT LIVING and CONTINUED SELF SUPPORT

First, take a moment to read and view a few sites. Second, post this message upon your own timeline in Facebook, if you have a FB account. Third, consider the combined results if 10% of your friends and your friend’s friends each participate to the equivalent of the cost of one cup of coffee shop coffee, one 12 pack of a favorite beverage, … you get the idea.

Building a Dream in the Country, BADITC, is a community centered fundraising effort with what seemed like a lofty goal initiating their efforts a mere 17 months ago. Now, the combined efforts of individuals, community, and several small organizations have reached slightly more than half of the goal of $200,000. Spring is knocking on the door, and the season most conducive to home construction beginning is thereby here as well. The push is on to bring the goal to fruition.

BADITC has a website with information and donation options found clearly by clicking upon the ‘donate’ link.
href="http://www.buildingadreaminthecountry.com";

Josh is the oldest son, and his passion is gardening, specifically hosta. A group of hosta friends are organizing a special event in the last half of May to support BADITC. Check out Facebook Events for details and announcements. The event will feature hostas for everyone from the beginning gardener to hybridizers and collectors of rare specimens. Help us attain BADITC’s goal.

Not a lot of more details to add. The Auction begins on May 18th and it will be posted on the Hosta Library website. Here's the FB post from Reldon.

"I will be hosting an online fundraising auction for the Spece Family and BADITC on the Hosta Library website later this spring from May 18th through June 1st. I am seeking hosta donations in all bidding ranges " from streakers and rarities to new plants on the market and everything in between. Other perennials and garden accessories are also needed. ‘Do Not Propagate or Share Without Permission’ notices will be included on donations for all who request it.

Thanks for your help for this great cause!

    Reldon Ramsey"

Local and regional Hosta Societies are getting involved. Recently Reldon received a check from the Mississippi Valley Hosta Society, and as many of you know the First Look Auction featured two one-of-a-kind plants donated by Jeff Miller and Don Dean. Each went for $500 bids and those bids were matched by the Region 1 Hosta Society. But even if you can't bid $500 on a plant (I can't) you can participate by donating or by bidding on a plant you like. Just do whatever you are able.

BTW, Auctions can be fun to watch, especially on the last day.

    Thanks

So, if you want to donate a plant, you just email your favoite hosta provider and tell them you want to donate to the Building a dream in the country auction or do you contact you guys first?

    BK,

Either would work. You could email Jeff Miller or Chris Wilson or Rob Mortko or whoever. Then contact Reldon and let him know what you intend to donate. If you need Reldon's contact info let me know. My email is available by clicking my name.

I've checked the Hosta Library Auction site and don't see the Spece auction. Is there a different link?

    MadPlanter,

Yes. It's right above the HL Auction Link. It's entitled 'Building A Dream In The Country Auction' right smack in the middle of the home page.

    Regards,
    Don B.

Is there anyone else that would prefer a better description of the item up for auction in the "item" column instead of the name of the person who donated it?

Silly you, Hippieindenile... Just click on the name of the donor and tah-dah you will see what it is that they have donated to the auction. It is just the way it is set up. Click away! ;-)

Thanks Babka for that advice...obviously I already know that I can see the name of the item and the long description of it after I click on the name of the person who donated it!

I find it annoying to click each persons name every time just to see what plants were newly posted since my last visit (since they don't stay in order when something new is added). When there are 63 postings and likely to be more, it is very time consuming to do that.

If it said, for example, "Fickle Blue Jeans" or "$50 Gift Card from Hallson's" then I would know if i'm interested or not without having to click on all of the items posted.

Oh, Hippieindenile, you are so right. I didn't realize that they change positions. I just made note of the ones that thrill me. There are some that are unbelievable....but I don't have the $300 bucks. I guess that since the HL hosts this for free (Bob is SUCH a good guy to do the whole Library for free) we have to go with what is available. Someone will probably come up with a few lines of code that might change that, but for now I'm just happy it is there, and I know you are too. (Great name by the way. )

OK for Hippie in De Nile and some others here's a list of the plants being offered in the Auction with the donor name followed by the name of the item. There are so many donations that it's hard to keep track of everything. But there is something for all of you in this Auction from 'Simon Says Shout' at $400+ to a Hallson's gift card. Thanks to Ross Johnson for the initial post of this on FB.

Thank you Steve for the list. You went to a lot of work by making up I am sure you are just as busy as the rest of us and it was very nice of you to take the time to do this up .Even if we can't purchase these in Canada without a greater expense of customs, etc it is still fun to look
    Thanks again

There are some wonderful donations on this auction, and I hope you will all get your bids in early. I know it's a bit of a pain to follow along, but when you are outbid on something you get an email telling you, with a link to the item which you can click to open the page and add another bid. It will be hard to keep track at the end, because there is an item closing every minute or so, and sometimes less. If there's something you really want, get the bid going now! I am following my own advice, and not waiting til the last minute to bid on things I'm interested in. It's been a lot of fun to follow along and see new things added every day. Reldon Ramsey has put in countless hours putting all of the donated items in the listing, and while it would have been good to have the item listed on the page along with the donor, there was no way to anticipate the generous outpouring of donations that would end up making things a bit confusing. If you are feeling frustrated by this, remember that Josh and his siblings can't even decide to just go in their room, without having someone open and close the door for them. That's just one small example of the frustrations of living in a non-wheelchair friendly home. A good total in this auction will make it possible for them to do that in their new home with voice activated door openers. I'm off to check the listings again! Hope to see lots of you over there.
