'Lakeside Black Satin' -- Oh, No -- Tell Me.

Oh, no. I bought this plant in 2005 from a reputable vendor. I am afraid this is HVX.

Thank my lucky stars, this plant has been in a pot by itself for two years. We've had strange weather this spring, 80Â° followed by 28Â°s for five days about two weeks ago, but I don't think that's the problem.

Questions:

1. is it HVX?

2. should I ask the vendor for a refund? No other plant in my garden has this, though one has a weird white veining I'll display in another message

3. the soil Â if it's HVX, can I use the soil in a totally different part of the garden, e.g., a sunny area where I raise sunflowers?

No doesn't look like HVX at all. Could be frost damage or damage caused by a preemergent.Do you use Preen?

Kent, I so hope you're right. No, I don't even know what Preen is [brief pause to google] Â nope, never had it anywhere around. We don't have anything like that.

And my nearest neighbors have kids, I don't think they would Â I'll ask when they get back in town next weekend.

I'm no expert, but it doesn't look like HVX to me... looks more like nutrient deficiency. I suspect later in the season this condition will fade, and the leaves will darken up...

The chlorosis is nutrient related...very common in cool, wet weather...especially on dark greens. It will color up normally in time.

The odd white streak...not sure, but I've seen it before. Could be physical damage...maybe a genetic "oops". Not HVX.

Josh, I didn't even see the white streak until you mentioned it, yikes! Thanks so much for the reassurance on the color.

I'm extra-hyper about HVX this year because I am finally getting the rest of my shade garden in, and there will be a lot of digging and moving. I don't want to spread contagion when I'm this:close to perfection, right? :)

Lisa, just have a bucket of bleach water and dip your tools for a few minutes between digging plants. You'll be fine!

And I completely agree with Ken...I'm seeing lots of "odd-ness" this year because of the cold. Just try to remain calm! ;-P

Thanks, Josh. All the reassurance is helping. 'Black Satin' showed up with this, and a mystery hosta in the next pot over showed up with white crackle lines (apparently also frost damage) and I started getting twitchy.

I'll try to calm down and give everything a month to straighten up and fly right!
