The more yellow the hosta, the more it's tendency to do well in sunnier areas.

This list will be a good spot to start.

The key is that they need to receive lots of water and have good well-drained soil so that the crown does not sit in water.

i have many green hosats that get full sun throughout the day and have no bleaching, mind you , i am in the PNW...

I see you are in Zone 5 that probably means you are fairly well north. You should know that the higher your latitude the less intense the Sun is, due to its angle toward the Earth. Besides latitude the other thing that effects sun tolerance of a hosta is water. The large leaves transpire a lot of water and in order for the plant not to wilt or burn, the roots must be able to take up lots of water. Thus some kind of irrigation system for the summer would allow you to be more successful. Drip is preferable to overhead watering.

You might try some of the plantaginea types like, Guacamole, Fried Bananas, Fried Green Tomatoes, Fragrant Bouquet or Plantaginea itself. You can also try Sum and Substance (mine is in afternoon sun and doing well), Parhelion, Zounds or montana Aureomarginata. Blues really won't work as the sun will melt the wax on the leaves and they'll turn green. Of course, the larger the root system, the better these hostas will do in that p.m. sun.

Ditto on what Steve says. Noon to 4 p.m. sun in North Carolina is very different than the noon to 4 p.m. in Michigan.

I have found that type of area (not full sun, but afternoon sun) a challenge. Full sun plants will not thrive but with our summers most part-sun plants get burnt up. I am trying some plantaginea types in those places, mulching the heck out of them, and making sure to water every day in July and August.

2 to 3 hours is NOT a lot of sun ....

the issue is transpiration .. losing more water than they take up in HEAT .... in the sun ...

how hot can they get in 2 hours of sun..

why cant they get over it.. when it turns to shade ...

but for white centered plants ... or big white edged plants..

i would NOT worry about it ..

if you select wrong.. and it shows too much damage.. NEXT YEAR ... move it ... we do NOT make assumptions in the year of transplant ...
