Life is to short to grow UGLY Hosta !

I thought I would just share that with you, Its from a friend of mine that is both a full scale pilot, and an RC pilot. We were at the field one day discussing how well some rc airplane flew, and he turned to me and said, "the plane is ugly, there are great looking planes that fly just as well.."
"life is to short to fly ugly planes."
He moved away lately, and that comment still keeps coming to mind .. now about Hosta.. I have my share of dead common greens, and white greens.. and I keep finding myself wanting to pry the poor things out of the ground to make room for some rare hybrid only aavailable from a monk in tibet ! :)

I guess maybe "Life is to short to grow ugly Hosta"

Are there any ugly hostas? Really? I even like my Outhouse Delight.

To a mother, all her children are beautiful.

How about "life is too short to grow tissue cultures!".

When you get older and closing up to that final date, things get into perspective!
Spend on good hostas and landscaping without endangering your retirement finances. Enjoyment is important. I buy larger plants when possible, but started growing seedlings for winter interest. A garden is also good for exercise.
I would like to add that growing the same looking hostas with different names is also Ugly. Like, I have now probably over 50 different-named green with yellow or white borders. Find really unique and good looking hostas and replace the not so good looking ones.

What are there - 8,000 named hosta now? In that batch there are look-alikes and duds.
It takes just as long to grow a poor specimen as it does a good specimen.
So, I agree. I remove what are, under my criteria, poor hosta from the garden. Those that burn every year, those that suffer from draw string edges, those that are exceptionally slug prone.
I don't want to grow every hosta. I want good ones.

Would make a wonderful T-shirt caption....Life is to short to grow UGLY Hosta ! Good one!!!!

I have a booth at a local Farmer's Market and the booth is next to an annual grower. Always teasing her that I would like a T-shirt with 'Real friends dont let friends buy annuals!'

Life is to short for ugly and slow growing hostas!

If you are going to put it on a T Shirt you might want to spell "too" correctly. It should read, "Life's too short to grow ugly, slow growing Hosta."

I'm actually enjoying my tissue cultures. I bought several last summer. Babied them during the summer & popped them in the nursery bed for winter. Every one survived. This year, I'm thinking of the nursery bed as my Hosta Minis Garden. A couple looked nice enough to go into their destined locations and a couple have been planted in planters amongst some annuals.

I certainly subscribe to the theory, but I have a really difficult time composting plants that are willing to grow in my garden - hence it is full of volunteers and MUCH too crowded.Sure would like one of those shirts though! Business opportunity for someone who attends conferences!

Nina, my criteria is similar to yours, and I also want quality over quantity.

I have Barbara Ann, which has draw stringed every year except one, I think. I stare at it, and think, "why? Why do you exist? Who made you? You would be so gorgeous were it not for that serious, potentially fatal flaw." I won't trash it, but I will give it away if it doesn't shape up. does ANYONE grow Barbara Ann without the drawstring problem?

I wondered about that " to or too " decided to go with the shorter CHEAPER spelling ! :)

I have a wooded weedy area at a friends where I can plant any unwanted Hosta, and let them run free ! hahahha

Anyone makes a mint on t-shirts! don't forget me ! :)

Did I mention I printed T's for twenty years? grin

As much as brevity is admirable, I do not like misspelled words in signs of any kind. Sign painters are some of the worst spellers in the WORLD. I sort of "collect" signs with spelling errors. An example is the bait shop with the sign out front selling SHINNERS and not SHINERS.

The classic sign for errors was the old "PLAN AHEAD" which, though spelled correctly, ran out of room for the words.

Maybe hosta hybridizers need to pay attention to the message:

LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO GROW UGLY HOSTA.

Has anyone noticed there is a hosta named 'Ugly' in the HL?
:)
