So, one more mail order

Started out looking for Hot Air Balloon, a progency of Sum & Substance to add to my collection and found it.

Well, of course it doesn't cost much more to ship another hosta AND they had Bridal Falls, so that one made it in the shopping cart too.

Then, for some reason, I got distracted and started to research Tetraploid hostas and decided to get a few to experiment with in my gardens that are in full sun:

Secret Ambition
Lakeside Black Satin
Frosted Dimples

and then threw in Ben Vernooij since it has thick leaves.

Isn't it crazy how one thing just leads to another!

Interesting experiment... Lakeside Black Satin has never gotten as dark as I think I'd like it - wonder what it will do in a lot of sun.

And Frosted Dimples... I've purposely planted some of sieboldianna heritage in sun, but only to promote a faster growth on a plant I wanted to share... in general, I'd think the wax will be gone by early summer... so a green Frosted Dimples... might be cool!

My how time passes when you are having fun! I am tempted with one more order as my last one just came in yesterday and it was only pots. I have been thinking about LS Black Satin for a while also. Just a great name. I like experimentation too. I had some in the sun last year I burned holes into. oops. Just wanted to know what they could take. For me it just got to hot for them after 4th of July. Hosta can take a lot of sun though. I was impressed.

Oh, that sets my PLACE ORDER trigger finger to ITCHING.
Sigh......

Well, I had LS Black Satin last year and it was so tiny when it went to sleep. I decided it wasn't going to appear this year, so I ordered a 2nd one. It arrived and was just a pip, the original one was a wee bit ahead of it. Now they are both up but less than 2 inches tall and about 5 inches wide in the pot, and I'm sweating what will happen as time goes by.

Both are dark, but slow as molasses in the wintertime. If something takes a bite out of either plant, they will be decimated. I was thinking I'd gotten a dud but it must be normal for this hosta. If anyone has better luck with a 1st or 2nd year plant, please show me what it looks like.

I'm thinking they are too finicky for this gal to grow. I don't have time to coddle slow growing hosta, even if they will one day be gorgeous. Life's too short. I want what I want when I want it..... :)
