They're fairly new to the commercial market. I put one in last year and it is bigger this year, not bad for a giant hosta. Mine is in open shade - lots of light, but little direct sun. It's supposed to turn into a monster, so be sure you have plenty of room for it to grow..

Here's my 2d year in HW. It wasn't all that big when I got it, so I'd say it grows pretty fast. It's not virused, just turning from green to a darker blue green. Unless it changes color with age, the famous shot of the lady and the mature HW is way too blue.

Well I picked up a humpback whale over lunch. Boy was it heavy. (Just kidding)

Here's a shot of it, not a bad size I guess. Behind it is a blue angel and to the left an ab drinking cup, also waiting to be planted. For now they're hanging out by some willows where they get some filtered morning sun and afternoon shade.

That's about the size mine was when I bought it. Have fun with your Whale!

I believe the "lady" in the Library photo is the originator herself, one Mildred Seaver. Hybridizer extraordinaire. Yes, the whole photo is too blue.

It does develop a "Hump" but it takes about 4 or 5 years. Here's the clump I saw in Paula Lehtola's garden during the convention. At the time it was the only clump existing.
