Just curious what kind of growth rate can I expect from Wu?I have two that where very small last yr when I planted them. This yr they are about 12 inches tall. I left lots of room around them for growth.
MMA, where did you get your Empress Wu from? You got them last year, and they are only 12 inches tall THIS YEAR? Hmmm, do you have a picture of the two? Honestly, I thought they sprung out of the seed being taller than 12 inches!
Here is mine received earlier this month from Naylor Creek. It is in the shade but our temp and humidity is rather high, and it is standing perfectly upright with no bracing except for the light tape holding the pets together. So it is a very strong girl.

Mine is 3 years in my garden, in shade and with regular watering. The first year it burned in several hours of sun, but is doing fine now, about 30 inches tall and 58 in wide.
Mine are in deep shade - and they are growing very very slowly. I think if you really want to grow giants... EW, Komodo Dragon, etc... you have to have at least very bright shade and maybe some direct sun...
sounds like sidney and berdnys experience verifies that. (That white fence reflects a lot of good, mild light on that plant!)
Yes, with the white fence, but there is a pear tree above it. The plus is that it is in the vegetable and fruit garden which gets daily water. For full disclosure, my 10 year old grandson owns the Empress and is proud of it, what a way to hook him! Bernd
