Fire Island is missing the fire....should be some red petioles and into the leaf.

It was red but has since faded a bit.

I agree with Paul, the hosta in your picture is not Fire Island. The petioles are not red. Fire Island petioles stay red all season and do not fade. Yours also has green scapes while Fire Island's scapes are a deep red.

Again, 'Fire Island' should have red petioles. No matter how much the leaves on mine bleach over the summer, the red never does. Either you have a mislabeled plant or just a bad sport.

I'd just bought Fire Island a couple of weeks ago and it has red pets. I hope it is a stable quality. A year ago I'd made a decision to pursue hostas with red not only in pets but showing into the leaves. My first was Cherry Berry, and it is doing well into it's 3rd spring.
Steve, if I remember (which is becoming a serious ?) spoke of someone in NE developing a hosta with red leaves that might be available in a couple of years. Any update.

If folks like Fire Island, they should also take a look at Paradise Island. Marco came up with a nice sport... pretty much Fire Island with an irregular dark margin. It's nice!

gogirlterri - I've got three for you to look at that get red up onto the leaf... you probably already know this but...

Harry van der Laar is a really nice plant.

Katsuragawa Beni has a different look entirely, also nice.

And there is a margined seedling of KB that, for me, hasn't grown as fast but is now settling in to an attractive look - Red Alert.

(since KB isn't streaky, I'm not quite sure how RA is a hybrid with KB as a pod parent... pretty rare to get a margined seedling from a non-streaky pod parent...)
