Where did this variegated seedling come from?

I didn't want to continue hijacking Sandy's Albomarginata thread, which was really to talk about how pretty hers was, so I'm starting my own to get to the bottom of how I got this seedling that *looks* like H. undulata Albomarginata (shiny underside and more slumped habit than fortunei). But if undulatas are sterile, how did I end up with it?

When it started growing, I only had three hosta in my garden: big greenies, Albomarginata, and a Golden Tiara (the latter far away in the front yard).

Aug. 2010: It started off plain green, and I assumed it was Erromena:

Sep. 2011: Bad photo, but some of the leaves are starting to show variegation at this point:

May 2013: You can kind of see bits of gray-green between the white edges and the green centers:

And the shiny underside:

So am I misidentifying the Albo. as undulata, can a plain greenie spawn a variegated baby, or what??
