Do you know about "bud culling"?

"Often a desirable sport appears in only a leaf or two on a hosta. Previous methods described for trying to isolate that sport and get a whole plant of that type have involved reducing the plant to a minimum size or just leaving it alone and hoping for the best. The method described here, which I call "Bud Culling" is a method that leaves most of the plant intact and allows it to get off to a much better start than methods like Ran Lydell's "Bud Isolation", which reduces the resulting plant to liner size."

That is a fun leaf design! Mine has several leaves doing something strange...the color on the leaf is split down the center...green on one side and yellow on the other side.

That would be one fabulous hosta. Tall vase shaped wide yellow margins with blue center, that would be a must have.

Steve that article on bud culling was very informative. Should help with culling unwanted reversions as well. My very old June is sprouting some Halcyon leaves. I also enjoyed the article at the reading room about the different growth patterns in young as opposed to older hostas.

Steve, thank you for the 'Bud Culling' article. Just yesterday I separated a division from my hosta 'Antioch' which has very wide white borders, slim green center. 4 or so leaves are desired, but one leaf is the usual. So in fall I will remove the bud under the not-desired leaf and that leaf. Thanks!
