Started A New Job Last Monday...

...My primary duty is to drive basically all over parts North of Denver and QC areas that have been located and marked for companies and also private lots (homes) in hopes to prevent underground utility lines from being hit when the areas are dug out. I have a fairly good background as a utility locater, so it's right up my alley. However........

I have seen so many hostas on almost a daily basis it's making my head spin!!!! This is an unexpected perk of the job I didn't even think about until I began the field work last week! WOW!!!! This coming week I'll still be basically training in the field with a senior QC guy, but after next week, I think I'll be going out solo from then on.

My camera will be coming with me at that point, and I'll be sure to post pics on our forum. I've seen some stunning hosta gardens/patios with potted hostas/and some individual gorgeous plants sited here and there in typical bed/shade variety gardens. That's just in the first five days on the job. The best is yet to come, I think!

Nice fringe benefit! I do all my traveling in Jan, Feb, March, and early April. Nothing to see but snow and more snow. But, I shouldn't complain though as I have most of the rest of the year off.

Are you like Miss Dig or Julie?

Basic answer to your question,Gesila, I work for one of the companies that, in essence, Miss Dig Colorado (Dial 811!) gives the site information to. One of our locators will go to the site, find and mark the underground lines, and then I go QC a certain percentage of them.

I've seen very few mature hosta outside of pictures, so this makes it extra wonderful.

I better pay attention when I'm at these private residences; These hosta kept trying to distract me all week! I was also thinking this could be a great opportunity to help Bob Axmear and The Hosta Library out, because I already saw a few I couldn't I.D. if I had a gun to my head. So maybe I can post some pics here, get 'em identified, and e-mail Mr. Axmear some he might need for the photofiles.

I guess I badly underestimated how many people here in Colorado have hosta. All I have to do is walk around in their backyards and see! ; )

Wow sound like you have a great new job. Keeping hostas safe from underground power! Too bad hosta do not grow from leaf cuttings. (sad face inserted here). Cannot wait to see the photos!

Careful Don. I would ask for permission before taking any pictures on someone's property.

Of course, Jon. Even though it's my job to take pics of the proposed dig sites/location marks, I would still ask permission before photographing their flora.
