Interesting fact that I learned about shiny backed hostas from Thomas at Sebright Gardens. He said that shiny backed leaves were originally found on wild hostas growing in areas with very little light abailable to them. They use the shiny backs of their leaves to reflect the sunlight for more gigorous growth. This trait, of course, was then passed on to our newer cultivars through hybridization. I can't remember which species this originated with. Maybe someone here knows?
