Fish emulsion?

Anybody use fish emulsion on their hostas?

I am an impatient gardener with a bed of 1 and 2-year-old plants. Hostas and heucheras mostly. I heard someone at our local greenhouse talking about using fish emulsion on everything they grew - perennials, shrubs, trees, etc. I had some fish emulsion from several years ago, when I lived at another house with lots and lots of daylilies. The daylilies liked it.

So I mixed some up and poured it on the hostas and heucheras. I had forgotten how bad it smelled, though. It sure didn't take the flies long to find where I was mixing it on the porch. Next time I will mix it beside the hosta bed.

Are my hostas gonna grow now? Or will they gasp, gag and die?
