I prefer early spring (Bullet Stage) the hostas recoup quickly at this time of year, and will look good for the season.

That being said you can do them now, however the newly divided plants may look a little rough for the rest of the year.

next year all will be good.

My personal preference is this time of year, when the roots are actively growing. Make sure you keep the transplants well hydrated and you may find they'll benefit from staking and/or tieing up with masking tape to help support the current growth.

Spring or Fall rather than mid-summer. Divided plants will recover better in cooler temperatures and with supplemental moisture. I use recycled plastic containers that I fill with water, poke a pinhole an inch from the bottom and set them close to the plant's base. They get watered deep; helps them get their roots established.

Thanks all! I know it's going to be more work, but will probably have to divide now, I have to clear out this bed and need to do some major work on soil and prep for fall planting.
