I have tried a couple different 'self-watering' pots and they work pretty well! But you still have to remember to add water sooner or later.

That is true, but even adding a couple of days of not watering is a big deal, especially for some folks on here! I have read that it takes some people hours.

They could use the hours saved for more hosta research/shopping :)

I saw those too at Lowe's... Pretty cheap, too... $2!! My Pauls Glory and Fortunei Aureomarginata are currently in them!

$2! I paid $7.50 plus 13% tax. Sigh, we Canadians always pay more than you, in the U.S.

LOL! Yea the one the F.Aureomarginata is in was exactly $2. The one the Paul's Glory is in was only $1.50!! It's smaller though.

Just a word of caution. The ones first shown have a wick to suck the water up. I got some of the others, with the saucer built onto the bottom, and they are a way of holding the water in the pot, if you water from the top.

Watering from the top, you must be sure to let the water fully drain. Otherwise, your lovely hosta will sit there and rot. They always said hosta like good draining soil or potting mix.

The ones sold by WalMart last year, I got them. Pretty soon, I was having problems with leaves dying off, and that's when I realized they were sitting in a slurry of soil and water. I got out the drill and put three holes through the bottoms, through the saucer, and even through the inside of the pot. I am phasing out those pots as things grow bigger, and I'm getting instead the black nursery style pots that Lowes started selling down here this spring. The holes are on the sides, not on the bottom. It doesn't really need to be elevated to get good drainage.

Just a word about my experience. I'd hate to see your lovely hosta drown.

Thanks, I hadn't thought about that. I will let them run dry every once in a while and keep an eye on them.
