Tons of fat seed pods this year!

The weather in St. Louis has apparently been favorable for seed-setting, and I have tons of fat seed pods on most of my Hosta.

Thus far, the only seedlings I have had "volunteer" to grow are Ventricosa, but I would love to encourage some new varieties to sprout in the garden (I don't know if I can manage indoor seed starting).

Because I have limited space, and my hosta bed is maturing (= not a lot of open space between plants), will seed pods scattered at the base of the momma plants even have a chance? Do they need any direct sun? Would a light top-dressing of something (compost?) at the base of the momma plant give the seeds a better chance? I know I am looking for the lazy woman's version of seed starting :-)

I am also going to try the winter sowing way using milk jugs - since that worked so well for me a few years back with perennials.

Thanks for any advice you have to share!
