I have 10 hosta "Junes" along my front sidewalk. This is their 3rd year and my largest one is 14" across (leaf tip to leaf tip), is this as big as they will get? I was hoping for a bigger hosta. Paul

My largest is over 30" in diameter. They will keep getting wider as time goes on. This pic was from '08 and it was over 26" wide then.

Beautiful hosta but not necessarily a speedy grower.

I'm trying to be patient with mine too. Three years young.

I don't find any in that family very fast, but they are worth the wait. Mine is about 30", I'm guessing, and is five years old but I did not start with a very small plant.

Recently one of the experts who 'hang' here mentioned this:

A rough quote: 'Hosta maximum height is genetically controlled. Hosta clump size is determined by where it's planted, soil and light-wise and easily modified by sharp tools such as a shovel, trowel, or perhaps in the case of mini's, sharpened spoons.'

I'm sure I embellished on the originator's statement, but wanted to be sure to give credit to who recently started this thought in my mind.

If you think about it, these ideas are the probably reason the AHS designates Hosta size by height, not clump size.

More water will help them realize their genetic potential more quickly. Are you giving them at least an inch of water per week? I have two Junes which at two years of age are about 24 inches in diameter each. One is in deep shade and one is in morning sun. But they both get regular supplemental water.

I thank you all and am encouraged to know that, with time, they will likely get bigger!! Thanks again- Paul
