A tale of two Tokudamas

I have two Tokudama Flavocircinalises, both bought at the same time from the same nursery in 2006. They were both moved around a few times before arriving in their permanent homes.

Tok 1 is planted in the ground, near the base of a huge pine and in proximity to some other trees as well. The only direct sun it gets is at the very end of the day. It measures 48" across.

Tok 2 is planted in a spinout bag under a red maple and gets periods of direct sun and dappled light all day... It's 30" across. Visually, it looks like Tok 2 is about a third the size as Tok 1....major difference.

So I'm wondering- why the size discrepancy? I know it's in a bag, but so is every other hosta in that bed, and they all seem to be doing reasonably well with that. Heatwave is right next to it and has caught up to Tok 2 this year, despite being several years younger.
