but.. you are onto something.. if you use the right day of the year ...

and do understand.. that is the hosta line.. not the bed line... the bed extends beyond such .. for sun companions ... as well as edges or borders ...

when you can use sun annuals.. as companions.. then you are really pushing the hosta envelope .... eh ..

I have never told the plants about that whole summer solstice thing ... But they KNOW if I catch them out in the sun on ANY day ! There WILL be consequences !

What I do is,observe where the sun is at different times of the day,during hosta season,and plant accordingly. I would never plant blue hostas where it is always real sunny,for example. Phil

Expand out, by using a taller shurb or perennial grass towards the end of the house where there are no windows.

I can see a curve forming in this bed and an expansion!

Just to the left and out of site ... on the far end a 18 foot crab apple, and on the near side a newly planted Japanese tree Lilac.. only about 9 foot tall. but eventually it will throw a pretty good shadow..

For some reason the Japanese Tree Lilac didn't bloom this year? But its growing like a weed !
