No, it's probably sun burn or a dry spell or if they are old leaves, it could be cold damage. That's the way it responds to stress.. It's not a problem. Water them.

I'd also say sunburn... though keep an eye on the brown stripes between the veins... and do a little research on nematodes in hostas... might be nothing, but worth watching...

Don't think that is foliar nematodes in Smith's leaf, unless it progresses to look like this picture below. I had 3 plants come down with it, all from the same nursery last May 2012. Some said it was "too early" for nems in their part of the country, but not here as early as the season started.

It is my observation that the nems go wall-to-wall between two veins, and run almost the whole distance of that section of the leaf.

The plants lived although they were set back because i treated them. The problem with nems, Smith, is they can spread from the soil by water transport to the leaves. Which is why overhead watering/sprinkling can spread it. Oh it doesn't KILL the plant, it just gives it the bad uglies, and spreads the uglies around.

Keep an eye on your plant, in case it develops something like this leaf has. BTW, it is clear of nems today, or shows no outward signs of having them, and it is growing and is located in a lot of sun. It is a plantaginea species hosta. My favorite hosta ever. So while some folks might say toss such a plain plant, they are worth saving or experimenting on at least.

I am also in zone 5. In my area nematodes usually show up at present date, but I agree the poster's picture shows sunburn. Since my own h.'Guacamole's are not sun burned, probably the hosta shown was not watered enough. Bernd
