Can anyone help identify what could be embedded on the underside of this hosta and please don't say that the hosta fairies are playing hosta darts. The hosta is located in a barrel with others, beneath a pine tree and appears to be attracted to thicker leaf types. On the outside it looks like plant material but when pulled apart I can see squishy stuff ...like some sort of insect in development . The only evidence they leave behind are tiny little holes.

Any idea what this is?
