did you have any frost damage???

if you track down into the plant... new leaves come from the center.. so the oldest leaves are usually around the outer edge.. and end up being the ones that are laying on the ground ...

please dont be this year.. chicken little on hvx ... its rather rare .. EXCEPT when the hardcore come together in a place like this ...

one year.. we had one peep ... who threw out a number of plants.. before we could stop them and force them to take a deep breath ....

i hope chris chimes in... this one is really confusing ... and its the weird crinkly edge in the pic above.. that is confusing me.. the coloring doesnt that much ... now you are confused... lol ...

Thanks for the reply, Ken. We had a colder, later spring than normal, and all my hostas were a bit later coming up, but I don't think this is frost damage. The mottling is not restricted to the oldest, outside leaves, but it is mainly on the left half of the plant (nearest the edge of the bed and next to a foot path).

The affected leaves are not thicker, lumpier or bumpier than the normal leaves, and not all of them have crinkly edges.

Here's a photo of the plant taken on June 16 after a heavy rain. It shows some of the affected leaves.
