| I took Jon's suggestion and go the mister. Then I saw the spider webs. Is it spider mites? Could that have anything to do with the flowers not opening?

Not spider mites, just looks like baby spiders that just hatched out. Spider mites are smaller, usually on the back of the leaf and they are sap-sucking, causing the leaf to look bleached out. The way to tell if you have spider mites is to take a leaf and tap it over a white piece of paper. If you find tiny black or red dots that move, you have spider mites. They also make tiny webs in leaf and stem joints. Kind of doubt that it is the spiders that are keeping your flowers from opening. I would say their presence is coincidental. Sandy

We have lots of problems with spider mites on tomatoes (not me, I gave up on tomatoes long ago), that's why I was asking. They turn the tomato vines brown like the flower "bracts", for lack of the correct word. Once they get on your tomatoes, you might as well pull them up, as you can't do anything about them, as I understand it. bkay

If I pulled off one of those buds and sliced it open, could I tell if it was Aphrodite instead of plantaginea? bkay

From the flower on the left, it looks like the outer petal is trying to open and there appears to be another petal right underneath it, so this could be an Aphrodite. Just pinch off the tip of that flower and if there are extra petals down inside there then the mystery is solved, you don't have plantaginea but instead have Aphrodite.
