It's called a "fasciated" growth. It happens when something damages the growing point. Most any plant can become fasciated. It can be caused by bacteria, fungi, insect feeding/burrowing, frost, mutations...you may never know what caused your hosta's fasciation, but it's nothing to worry about. It usually doesn't repeat the next year, and it's rarely contagious. If it looks too creepy, just cut it off.

Oh, by the way, I've personally seen it on hostas, roses, lilies, okra (!!!), rudbeckias, various weeds...

Luuk could make a salad out of it; That looks edible to me!

Good idea Don, in place of the celery I can put scapes in the salad, ... but only if it's BIO!
The pips of plantaginea that I've eaten in spring were very good, maybe even the scapes are:-) ... I also have mushrooms as a side dish ... Lol

Looks too healthy, luuk. Where's the beef?

Some of the petioles have lovely celery shapes. Would it also have the "strings" on the stalks? I've never eaten any hosta parts, although I know they are considered edible. It is perhaps a TABOO.
