The tree is beautiful (Junglands mandshurica) and it makes good shadow for hostas. This year I finally realize how much it takes water and power - something must be done. I dig all hostas up (about 150, mostly not mature) and ripped three wheelbarrows of roots.
I put 'rootcarpet' and 50-60 cm soil. Knees, wrist and back are not so good shape. Finally today I planted hostas back. I want to share these pictures. Hopefully I am able to be patient to NOT move them again. At least now hostas are not competiting with tree.
Hostas are good but I like black soil too, unfortunately it doesn't stay like that. |

Jarih, That's a terrific looking hosta bed. All your hostas look perfect and happy. You must be happy too, now that your task is finished.

I just mean weeds and before that work there was a little bit moss too. I tried to make better pH by adding chalk and very top I put composted soil.

Jarih, your garden is beautiful. How are your recent arrivals doing?

jarih, Pretty soon you will not have to worry about weeds very much....but you may have to think about where to put all those hosta as they get bigger. Judging by the care you have put into this planting it will not be long. Jon

What a beautiful garden....bringing the soil level up is a good idea, and it will help the hosta avoid root competition. What a major effort it took to prepare the bed though. You have lovely plants. I hope you are sitting nearby and drinking a toast to your garden's future. Long may it grow!! Cheers!! A votre sante, Skol!!!

Thank you for all comments. New arrivals are alive. One of them is bad shape and two don't have leafs at all. But the rest - roots are growing, jippii.. There is white new parts in roots and new leafs too. Tick Tock and Ice Age Trail are like they haven't made long long travel. After couple of years I shall have hostas to divided. Hopefully there is hostamania in Finland and I can earn some money back what I have spent:)

That looks wonderful. Once your neighbors see how beautiful it is, they will be lining up to buy your divisions!
