Very nice presentation, Beverly. Love the red scapes. Show us the flowers when it blooms. Steve

HH, seems to me there is something unusual about some of the leaves, such as what you see in the leaf on the far right in the second shot. Is that just an unusual hi-light in the shot? Pieter

Pieter, Good eye! The light on the leaf at the far right is catching the light just right to show the mineral deposits that accumulate from heavy watering from our well water. Now today, after several days of on-and-off again rain, I noticed that most of the Hostas are back to their true color temperature, yay! The minerals are washed off and perhaps being used by the plants through the roots now. I've seen worse in other gardens. Thanks for bringing it up! hh

Nice leaf shot HH. Mine is still in bud. Some warmer weather next week may open them. Wait, wait, wait, Beverly (not the most patient gardener)

Bev, really great container hosta, those scapes are definitely showing their red with that jade green pot. I love nice deep pots like that, the roots can grow down where they stay cool in the summer, and I don't have to monitor the temps when sunshine strikes the ceramic body. How awesome that this is blooming in zone 4 at this time of year! Hold back the frost, but if it looks imminent do you have a spot to move it for protection until it accomplishes its bloom cycle? Great presentation for your garden. Maybe a couple more containers scattered in a few places will give you more growing room? And some height.....set the container on a platform...not really a pedestal but a sort of squared stack of unused pavers or flat stones, basic building blocks for garden paths.

When I read your post, Moccasinlanding, I went out and covered it last night. There was patchy frost. There won't be any worry for a few days now. Thanks for the suggestion. Beverly

Bev, so glad that something I said could be useful. And, I'll hurry up and do my ordering from your part of the country, before the heavy frosts hit.

BeverlyMN, Our RA flower buds today and yesterday look exactly at the stage in your initial foto here. Are yours showing any signs of opening yet. It has been much warmer (daytime anyway) this week than last, but no open flowers as yet. Perhaps the mid-30's lower 40's night temps are hanging it up? So far we've dodged the frost bullet, but just so. The 1650' above sea level elevation and relative height to surrounding area helps a lot in that regard. Then again, between the north side of the ridge blocking the warm spring breezes and the pine forest blocking the sun, we pay for it in spring when we have the last snow for miles ;-) Hope you get flowers! hh

Hey, I don't think I mentioned it any place else, but when I ordered at least 10 days ago from WadeGatton, Dawn told me that Oct 1 will be the last of their digging days this year. So I'm squeaking through right on the deadline, and they ship my order tomorrow. It will be my last order for this year. Many of their fragrant hosta and maybe not all will be sent, but I of course expect to get some very sleepy big ole hostas, thinking they are going to bed, and wake up SURPRISE with another month or more of party time south Alabama style! Whoop-tee-dooo. The ones I got from Hallsons and Don Rawson the end of this week were also yawning with a few yellow/gold leaves, but not dormant yet. Interesting what they will do now.

I moved Red Alert to a sunny location today, I hope to improve my chances of seeing the blooms. Right now it still is not open. Beverlly

Hi, Red Alert is like clausa and Purple Lady Finger - the flowers don't actually open on them. Chris

Another one I have which is blooming now, nice medium dark lavender blooms up and down the scape, and they are not opening either. It is Plumb Bob. Nice lance leaves.
|
Fiddlesticks. The parent, Katsuragawa Beni, has flowers that open. I didn't notice that they didn't open when I ordered it. I just noticed the "dark lavender" part of the description. I'll have to admire the scapes. Thanks for the info Chris. Beverly
