BTW ... if you were just cutting huge hunks... that by shear weight.. would stay in the ground... go for it ...

but if you are going down to small divisions for sharing ... wait until spring ....in the cold white north ...

had you had the foresight ... this should have been done in late july or august ... early enough for the soil to settle and grab hold ....

I am Iowa and still doing just what you say. Make sure you plug the pot where it will not get deluged by rain, which will make it susceptible to rot when freeze/thaw cycle sets in.

Wait until spring. Once the weather gets cold hostas stop sending out new roots so it is really too late to be dividing and potting and there is no advantage to doing it now vs. doing it in the spring - you will get the same amount of root growth in the spring without the winter loses.
