Stick'em in a bucket of water, up to within an inch of the crown. If you're planning to plant them within a few days, they'll be just fine like that, as long as you keep them in the shade.

When you move them, put them in plastic heavy duty trash bags---it will keep the car cleaner. And you can pulll them out of the car or truck & set the bags on a sidewalk or drive without a lot of mud & such spreading around--not that we are picky here but then you have to sweep it off.

if you don't have a couple thousand laying around.. go beg some grocery bags from the grocery store ...

double the bags for heavier ones ...

I transplanted a couple dozen hosta last year, several hundred miles.

Don't bother wetting them before you move, it will just make them heavy and ... wet.

Water them well after you've got them transplanted, and they'll be fine.
