"Silver lining" bed done enough to start planting.

A while back I posted about two dead elms, my husband's adventures with a chainsaw, and the fact that once the mess was cleaned up I saw a possible hosta bed.

He put in 36" of wooden retaining wall, helped me with the landscaping block, and shoveled truckloads of dirt and compost. Helped with the new sun bed, too. So I'd say he's more than forgiven for the bench, pots, and birdhouses the tree fell on.

I still have to clean up part of the bed, dig in the pavers, and put in edgers, but the main part already has a dozen hostas. Humpbacked Whale is in the middle, and will look silly for a few years until it gets big.

That bottom photo is the new sun bed with all the day lilies & etc. waiting to be planted (groan). Can't wait for next July, should be very pretty.

MadPlanter, I love how your vision grew into reality...that looks like a supreme hosta garden! The two of you must have really enjoyed building it together..block by block....it looks strong and beautiful.

Love everything about it, especially leaving that trunk. The multi-levelled tiers add so much dimension to this garden...I can't wait to view more photos as your garden evolves.

Thanks for sharing and inspiring.

Those long and relatively high walls with all its anchoring and draining must have taken a lot of work for your husband. Congratulations to a great landscaping job! Bernd

The wooden wall was 4 boards high, then 5, and finally 6, as we tried to tame the slope. At least the work was spaced out. And the uppermost wall was done years ago. All I had to build were the two lower ones. I would have liked to extend it a few more feet. For that matter, I would have liked to build the whole thing in block, but I was re-using block from an old wall, and it's been discontinued.

Working with landscape block is kind of fun; like playing with Legos, only heavier. As a bonus, I finally got rid of the pallets of block that have been sitting in the side yard for four years. Knew they'd be useful someday.

The daylilies are in. Now it's time to mulch everything and wait for spring. With a 50-50 blend of soil and compost, things should really grow. And I'll need new hostas to fill the bed (bwha-ha-ha).
