Your Favorite White-Margined Hosta?

don_in_colorado

Hi all. I'm posting a few pics of white-margined hostas that are favorites of mine. Some peeps think they're too boring, while others don't. I thought I'd get bored quickly with them when I caught hosta fever last year, BUT I'm still discovering varieties I absolutely love. Like 'Lakeside Roy El' here.

Please post yours if you want...Or just enjoy some pics.

Thanks!
Don B.

Potted-up 'Formal Attire'. I think this'll work well in a pot, as it grows and the leaves drape down more.

Well, they certainly aren't boring! Every time I see Lakeside Kaleidoscope, I think "I have to get that". It really is gorgeous! The others are very nice also.

Thanks for posting all the pics. I really enjoy looking at them.

Don, I have many (not all) of the ones your posted. White margins, not my favorite, but I do like some in my garden. That LS Kaleidoscope is outrageous.

Here is one not yet shown: Ice Follies.

EDIT: Hostahosta, I just looked up 'Ice Follies' and saw some mature plants; Thanks for YOUR enabling, too, as it's pretty darn beautiful.

I've posted this pic before, but this variegation is too much...'Lakeside Kaleidoscope'. What a great plant. I moved it into a shadier location, as it fried in too much sun.

'Formal Attire' on left, 'Gone With The Wind' and 'Dark Shadows'. FA was from Green Mountain, GWTW and DS were from Hallson Gardens.

Beautiful plants everyone. More have been addedto my list.

Don, good luck with Lakeside Kalidescope. I've had this plant for a long time and really liked it. People often mentioned that the edges melted away on theirs. Mine never did until about 2 years ago. I moved it to more shade. This year it was a mess, partly due to slugs in the spring when I was away. I may try dividing it next year but enjoy it while you can and don't be surprised if eventually it starts looking ratty

Green with a white margin is probably my favorite category of Hostas. Here are just a few of my favorites.

My most favorite...gee, I think it may have to be Blue Ivory. Sorry about the dirty leaves. Pic taken before I got around to mulching and dirt splashed on it whenever it rained or when I watered.

OK, Don, in spite of the warnings from McTavish, Lake Kaleidoscope is on my want list. So spectacular.

Love that Zippity Do Dah. Mine's been in for years and hasn't done much. Maybe it's time for a jolt of fertilizer.

While Great Escape is my absolute favorite, I have a soft spot for My Friend Nancy, too. It starts out with a yellow edge, but by late summer is a beautiful steel blue and white. The only photo I have is from May, and MFN is in full sun and unphotographable right now.

Actually, I did site 'Lakeside Kaleidoscope' in way too much sun. It ended up with very fried margins, but held up for a surprisingly extended time before it burned. I now have it sited where it'll get much less direct sun. Also, it's sited where guests can't miss it now.

To be honest, even if it fries again next year, the couple months at it's peak will make it worth owning; At least for me. : ) It's just so beautiful!

    Don B.

P.S.: 'Blue Ivory'...'Great Escape'...Gorgeous! Faye, is 'Frosted Jade' as beautiful in real-life as in pics? I plan on FJ being one of my first purchases for next season...I know it'll get giant!

Don--Fragrant Tundra hosta? Where did you get that one? Googled it and got nada. Please tell us more about it!

LOL Ci Lantro, sorry, that is one that I found on a flat full of 'Guacamole'. Looks like 'Fragrant Bouquet' to a good extent. Some kind of sport/mutation of 'Guacamole', so until it matures and I see what it REALLY will look like, I gave it the garden name of 'Fragrant Tundra', because it got literally frozen into the ground on a late freeze in early May. All the leaves were killed, but it came back like a champ, as you can see. Was gonna give an explanation for it when I posted the pic, but apparantly I forgot.

Hi Don, Yes, Frosted Jade is a wonderful plant. I'd replace it in a second. Below is a picture of it in context showing it along side other plants to get a feeling of how large it is. For what it's worth this picture also shows Regal Splendor and Zippity Do Dah on opposite sides of a path. I think they are different enough (Regal Splendor still showing a bit blue) for contrast but if it came down to a choice, I'd pick Zippity Do Dah first.

You got me thinking about Lakeside Kaleidoscope. I always loved this plant and don't want to discourage anyone from growing it. I've posted lots of pictures of it over the years. I decided to go back and look at when it got ratty looking. I'm starting a thread on it if you are interested. Myrle

For what it's worth, I bought my Frosted Jade based solely off of one of Myrle's pics in a post she did last year. I think Steve_Mass commented as well.

The plant is stunning in person, but Myrle always seems to capture something more with her photography. True eye of an artist. :)

I too would replace it in an instant. Highly recommended !
