Fall Splitting and Transpanting Strategy Zone 5

Creek-side

I inherited a bed of hostas that was totally overrun with some invasive weed that spreads via roots. I wanted to kill all the weeds, so about a month ago I dug up all the hostas (very large plants) and sprayed roundup.

All the weeds in the bed are dead, but the hostas I dug up still have weeds intertwined with the hosta roots. I want to kill them off completely, so in order to get rid of the weed roots I am splitting the hostas into individual plants with root balls that are about the size of a 4-inch pots.

So now it's late October in central Iowa, and I am wondering what the best approach would be to replant. I could just plant the little hostas now, and they would have maybe 3-5 weeks before the ground is fairly frozen. Or, I was thinking I could put them all in pots and put them in my cellar for the winter, and then plant them in the spring. The cellar averages about 55 degrees through the winter.

Appreciate any thoughts from the forum.
