Hmmm, there's something obviously suspicious here.

So that's what those nuts are I find everywhere here in zone 5. I just looked it up via Google. Squirrels break them open, must have very strong teeth, and leave the shell peaces lying around. But I have no black walnut tree, a neighbor must have one or more. I have seen a lot of the nut shells lying around, the first time since 1987, use them as part of mulch. Bernd

Maybe the squirrels are burying the walnuts in your yard.

A horizontal branch overhanging our deck provides a perfect place for squirrels to sit and eat walnuts. The dropped bits of shell make dark walnut coloured stains on the deck that are next to impossible to remove. And it isn't our yard that is harbouring a walnut tree!

We have a huge old black walnut overhanging our deck and patio, too, so we get the best of it (shade) and the worst of it, as you say the darn squirrels and the walnut bits. And the fallen leaves and stems, not to mention the hundreds of nuts hanging there like little bombs. Makes me want to wear a hard hat everytime I go out there. In the spring there are the walnut flowers. And in the summer, we get walnut caterpillars. Just can't win with this tree. If it wasn't the only shade we have on the south side of the house, it would have to go.....sigh. But daylilies, irises, and hostas grow under there just fine.
