Green Mountain order

I wanted some older hosta that weren't listed on many sites, so I tried Green Mountain Hosta. The only problem is that they seem to be putting up new scapes.

First was Royal Standard. I wanted a large one that would replace the one I lost to HVX, so I bought 2. The roots are full and each one has several large buds.

Then there's Fragrant Bouquet, two of those, too.

Then Honeybells, two of those, too.

The Bridegroom, but only one of those.

I'm very pleased.

I was also very happy with my Green Mtn order. They are high on my list for spring!

Nice! I don't see any scapes. Those are dormant eyes that will grow next year. Were they going dormant in a cooler locale before they were trimmed and shipped? I'm not familiar with Green Mtn.(location?) I would keep them on the dry side or even chill them and plant them when your temps cool and your other hostas are going dormant, since you probably have a couple warm months of Fall left.

If they are kept in warm moist soil now they might sprout those eyes this Fall, and then next Spring you will have smaller eyes with smaller leaves.

Either way you have some fine looking root systems there and we all know that good roots=good hostas.

GW is some great plants at even better prices. I have ordered from them for the past 2 years. Last fall I ordered and they were not totally dormant yet. They grew and I had to almost put some down myself in December. The last ones out this year was the GM order. They performed like champs but just came back last and compared to the spring order I think I set them back a little with the warm temps here. This year with the tree removal and soon re-roofing I have not ordered this fall. I have considered just ordering in the spring and let the growers keep them cool one more time. Bk, I would keep them cool and dark so the new eyes will not get confused. Sometimes I wish I had a root cellar for such times. Maybe a dark spot in the garage. Good luck GM has some great plants. Hmmm...Green Mountain is in Maine. They were going dormant, but I think I saw an eye peeking up yesterday. We had a "cold" front this week, so that may solve the problem. If not, should I pull them from the pots and bare root them? I could refrigerate them for a while, if necessary.

Would I get them dry and then pack them in newspapers?

Green Mountain is in East Dover, Vermont. You know Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. Fort Ticonderoga? OK, so it's not the Alamo, but it's still history.

Oops! Well, they are both way up there in the frozen North.
