Withdrawal

| Hi, fellow hostaphiles. I'm going through withdrawal because our forum has been so quiet. Does anyone have an idea for what we could do to energize the forum? I suppose we are all busy working on fall projects, or maybe we are just ready to put hosta aside for a few months and concentrate on something else.
I'm not very good at coming up with ideas, but...
We could chose a particular cultivar every few days and talk about our experience with it. Or... or what else? I need some help and inspiration here. Any ideas, anyone? |

We could play "name that hosta" and then once we guess it, others could post their pics of it and comment on it.

Hello, 'Center of Attention' |
RE: Withdrawal
| | |
| I've missed everyone, too, and was thinking the same thing, Lois. I am dreading the long, cold, lonely winter! Beautiful pic, Don. If everyone follows your lead (which I hope they do), I can see I will have a whole new list for next year. Thanks for the ID countrygarden. The list is started-lol. |
RE: Withdrawal

| No, not Center of Attention...a good guess, but guess again! |
RE: Withdrawal
| | |
| Lois, Thanks for starting this! Here's my guess: h. Ann Kulpa? Maybe Don R. can use incorrect but close guesses for the on-going list of same and similars. |
Hint

Here's a hint: "This extremely rare plant was registered by Belle Gardens in 1994 but is not widely available in the trade. A cross of [H. 'William Lachman' x montana] this one has some GREAT GENES! A stunner from 50 paces, DISTINCTIVE is an understatement! It produces viable seed on 21 inch high scapes of burgundy...according to the registration." (From the MyHostas Database) I don't think it's very rare nowdays...it's readily available. I like the very glossy leaves and sharp color contrast. |

| Ewww! "Peppermint Ice." O.K. I cheated. I looked it up. But a great idea, Don. Steve |

You've got it! Here are the "ice hostas": Blue Ice Fire and Ice Ice Age Trail Ice Castle Ice Cream Ice Follies Ice Palace Ice Prancer Iceberg Iced Lemon Lakeside Black Ice Lakeside Meadow Ice Peppermint Ice I like Peppermint ice very well. It is a medium size plant that always looks great in my garden. I particularly like very glossy leaves. Does anyone else have pics they can post of Peppermint Ice or want to chime in with their opinions of it? |

| Very nice hosta,Don! But I probably wouldn't get it because it reminds me too much of American Sweetheart, which I have. See pic. Phil

| Oh goodness me. . I just planted Peppermint Ice last year. . Don, thank you for that beautiful picture . . I can't wait till my PI grows up! er.. a. . I mean, Thank you, Don, for filling in a bit of "history" for me. . Sidney, acknowledging and recording a bit of. .er. . a history. . . :) |

| Thanks, Don, for the great idea. Beautiful hosta, too. The shiny leaves and the green and gold remind me of Queen Josephine. PI appears to turn whiter than QJ as the summer progresses though. Let's keep this going. |
RE: Withdrawal

| Don's Peppermint Ice is a beauty. Are we ready for another one? This pic is not nearly as impressive as Don's, but this hosta has been a great performer for me this fall. It survived the first frosts and was one of the last ones standing. This seemed particularly remarkable in that the light greens and golds seem to go first. Anyone else having good luck with this one?

| I love those ones with the bright, shiny leaves! But I am not done with this year. A bad a bout of diabetes related flare-ups that had my hands nearly paralyzed in pain all of September and early October. I didn't worry...but now October has been impossibly rainy and cold in my area. Today the sun is shiny, but I've got H1N1. Last night were horrific chills, but the fever has passed. Believe it or not, I think I'm going to go out and get some more plants in the ground. (I promise not to over do it, I'm just talking 15 minutes of easy planting in the sunniest part of the day. Just enough to feed the spirit.) I often have dilemnas like this, because I hate gardening in the heat of the summer. I love fall planting, but "never put off what you can do today" really applied this year. I waited through the heat and then the stars did not align for me in the fall! Now, on top of it all, you well-organized guys are tempting me to start this all over again for next year! What am I going to plant right now? First Frost, Orange Marmalade and Katie Q. Even when I'm sick, hostas keep my interest and spirit up! That Peppermint Ice looks SO happy! :) |

Evermore, is it Abiqua Recluse? It's an easy guess because you label your photos and it showed that name! Peggy |
RE: Withdrawal

| Duh! I learn something new ever day! Didn't know you could get back to the file. But, Peggy, you are right, of course. Abiqua Recluse and Abiqua Moonbeam seem to do very well for me, and they keep their looks well into the fall. Mary4b, I don't envy your H1N1, but I do envy the fact that you can still work in your garden. You must be in southern Wisconsin. I love Madison, where I lived for over 5 years. Get well soon. |
RE: Withdrawal

Thanks Evermore! I just got in from my planting and it did me a world of good. Nothing like fresh air and easy soil! I actually live in Menasha, which is just south of Green Bay's "Frozen Tundra", but definitely not in NW Wisconsin, which is significantly farther north than even Green Bay. The temp is 47 and I love working in that weather...no sweating! This week will be perfect planting..it's supposed to get to 58 on Thursday! I got the H1N1 from my husband. His was over and done with in 3 days...and he was back to work the next. (Doc said he could go back to work as soon as his fever was gone for 24 hours. So, far, he's doing fine with that recommendation.) I'm just praying mine is going to be that quick, too, so that I can really put the gardening to bed this week and start working full-time on that wish list! :) |
RE: Withdrawal

| Thanks, evermore, for continuing the thread, but I think we should start a new one for each unknown hosta. Maybe we could call it "Name That Hosta #1," and so on. Also, we should be sure to delete the names from our photos before posting or there'll be no guessing involved. |
RE: Withdrawal
| | |
| evermore...whats the hosta on the top left of the photo of abiqua recluse..the white and blue/green one? |
RE: Withdrawal, etc.
| | |
| I just did a little check on removing the name from your photos. Just removing the "title" on Photobucket did not stop the name from appearing on the photo. You must have to upload it from your computer without a name. That will be a little tedious for us anal types who have everything labeled. |
RE: Withdrawal
| | |
| loisf, when you figure out how to delete the titles on Photobucket, please let us know. Also, I agree that a new thread for each new Hosta Jeopardy would be a good idea. uk-hostaman, that's Queen Josephine. Normally, she doesn't look blue-green, but that's the way the camera saw her. loisf mentioned Queen Josephine earlier in this thread, and I agree with her: the shiny leaves in early season make this one stand out. |
RE: Withdrawal

I have never posted here, but do read all the posts. Last year you all did the alphabet soup. I know I really enjoyed that. We did it over on the daylily forum and flew through it, not any time to savor it.!!!! Anyway, we are going to make a second pot of soup when everyone is done with fall chores. I really enjoyed the hosta 'soup' last winter, looking forward to it again.:)) Cindy |
RE: Withdrawal

| what usually happens.. is after the hosta go down.. everyone seems to disappear.. until about the second or third week of January ... i think it has to do with holidays... school kids duties for us younger folk .... and just downright depression ... once all that happens.. and the days start to get longer after 12/27 ... we start to think about the potential of next year.. rather than the horror of this year ... ken |
