Which Will Be the Last Hosta Standing?

Today was partly sunny and drier than in awhile. I was out doing some cleanup when I saw my High Society and Halcyon still looked as good as they did in July. We’ve had 28 degrees twice and numerous frosts. Everything else is down or has turned gold or orange, but these two act like it is still midseason.

For me, June is still holding on, and my baby First Frost. Pretty much everything is yellow or mostly yellow, if not gone.

I still have Chinese Sunrise looking perfect. It is first to show for me, apparently last to say goodbye.

I agree: my Halcyon & June (its sport, of course!) are doing great! But...my August Moon & Cap't Kirk are definitely on their way out. (My Cherry Berry is non-existent...what a disappointing plant for me & my conditions!)

My Touch of Class has outlasted my June and Halcyon. I have bright lights in 3 locations and one is still looking good.

Neither drought, nor rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor freeze, nor dark of night has defeated Abiqua Moonbeam (aka Mayan Moon). It is the last and only hosta standing in my garden.

We had a sunny almost 50 degree day today. I got quite a bit of yard work done. In the area I worked Mikado was still standing with a small bit of yellow leaf. IT looks so big and strange with all the other hostas down around it. May and Lancifolia don't seem to know that we have had frosts. . lol
Tomorrow it's supposed to be in the fifties and the sixties for Sunday. Maybe I can get more yard work done.. . yippie. . .strange weather this year.

Oh to live in a zone where plants last beyond September. Mine are all toast and have been since we got hit with a hard, killing frost just over a month ago. My Dh whipper-snipped all the foliage down for me (he thinks letting the leaves melt on their own is ugly and is always after me to trim everything back) and said it was the most he's ever enjoyed looking at my hostas. LOL.

Everything was a little stunted this year as we got a bad frost at the beginning of June when we were on holidays. Actually, they got frost-nipped in August (usually our hottest month) when we were away so perhaps next year I should stay home and that will keep the frost away.

Hadspen Blue and the entire Halcyon group are in the running, along with a Blue Cadet seedling that's still hanging on. Lemon Merinque and Azure Snow are also among the last, and ruprifraga, but the last one standing in my garden is always Fall Bouquet.

I noticed the other day that almost all (may actually be all-didn't move all the leaves) my minis are still perfect! I bought several (okay, more than several) this year and I'm amazed that they show no signs of fading into fall. Kind of fun since I was thinking that I don't like them as much as the larger hosta.

First Frost finally yellowed, and Guacamole is slumped, yellow and on its way to become mush. Those two are a tie for the last to go dormant.

As of today - Lakeside Party Dress still looked perfect! Everything else has melted away...

In my garden, it seems to be 'Halcyon' that is most reluctant to melt into a glutinous mass!
All are very golden, and most sliming away or drying up!

Last weekend Smoothie had solid great leaves - they went to mush this week. Found Iwa and tardiflora near a variegated Weigelia still standing - then turned and found Chinese Sunrise still going strong.

Been down to 28 degrees a couple of nights already, then 3-5 inches rain from Hurricane Ida this week.

I have another month before they all go to sleep. No frosts here. The Halcyon family holds out the longest here, I think, but will be watching more closely this year just to see. All my little mice hostas are still pretty strong too. Christmas candy just turned to its fall colors, and Remember me is still strong.
