Shining, glistening, going

The Twin Cities area has just experienced the coolest first half of October on record. Last weekend's snow was unusual and discouraging. Royal Standard was completely snow-topped but the frosting had partly melted by the time I took pictures.

Still, when I was taking fall color pictures in the yard this weekend, I was struck by the shining, glistening, glossy colorful hosta leaves on their way out. I'm wringing the last drops of beauty out these babies before I give in to the inevitable.

I thought everybody (except maybe Ken) would enjoy seeing our beautiful maple.

Awesome colors! I'll bet that hosta was pretty with frosting!!

Wow, snow already! It has been unusually cold here too in the mountains of NE Tn but we haven't had snow yet. We have had about a week of rain which is wonderful. Now I guess we all hunker down for the long wait for spring.

that maple is perfectly sited in regard to hosta... i dont see one for 50 feet in any direction

i ONLY hate maples.. when i try to garden under them ...

peeps on tiny suburban lots may as well give up ...

your lot is not tiny ... so relish its beauty ...

Good tree placement and a testament to my restraint in placing hostas (so far). ;-)

I do, however, want to plant them in front of the bank of hydrangea to control erosion of that steep slope. Maple roots are there (it's over 50 feet from the trunk). I will need root control bags.

Spectacular shots! I have very fond memories of climbing to the top of our maple as a child-felt like I was at the top of the world. Mother did not grow hosta-LOL. Thanks for the memories, especially the view looking up into the tree-Ah yes, I remember it well...

Carol, The neighbor's plant is Dusty Miller, bordering this beautiful flower bed with "Almost Wild" Roses and pelargonia (geraniums).

RE: Shining, glistening, going

OMGosh, isn't that pretty! And you guys have such pretty grass.
Dusty Miller eh,it must be an annual?
Very nice,thank you****again,:0)
Oh, and i love the shot looking up into the tree as well.

Dusty Miller Centaurea cineraria is annual but as such it has a very long season, often still looking good at Thanksgiving (and sometimes until Christmas). It is borderline perennial here in zone 4b. It may winter over with winter protection when it is established in a good spot (full sun, south or southwest exposure is best) and it may come back for several years. This probably is the exception rather than the rule in our zone where most people treat it as an annual. It is commonly available at nurseries in our area, and easy to grow from seed.

Anout how many plants do you think are growing in that area?
I would love to copy that next year,do they spread?

RE: Shining, glistening, going

I would say easily there are 60 plants bordering that bed (it's big!!!). Here one typically would buy them in 6-packs, 8-packs or 9-packs. Spacing is 12" to 14" apart, and they grow to 18" to 24" tall. They can get leggy and a bit ratty so they look neater and grow bushier and lower if pinched back a bit in June. (This is a member of the aster family so I imagine it would be like pinching asters or mums.)

RE: Shining, glistening, going, more colors

More beauty in the ruins. Today I was totally enchanted by the colors of the August Moons by my front porch.

RE: Shining, glistening, going

Hello, folks!
I'm just excited that others can appreciate this last hurrah before the third season--that's right, third season...fall is almost MORE beautiful than the others--is finally done. In celebration I went out & snapped some photos. Enjoy!

Take THAT, you namby pamby cutter-downers of still fully-beautiful plants! May the fall live on! (I'm referring, of course, to those in my neighborhood who cut down their still thriving plants 2-3 weeks ago)

MCG, Wow! What great garden design. I love the sculptures.

What is bright blue and blooming?

You make me think of Virginia Woolf, The Years, "For it was October, the birth of the year ..." a phrase that transformed my views of autumn.

 o
RE: Shining, glistening, going

Thanks for the Virginia Woolf quote, manyhosta! How did you know that I was an English teacher?! Yes, isn't that blue/violet gorgeoso??!!! It's my monkshood aka wolfsbane aka aconitum. I'm so glad it managed to bloom so well early enough (it is, as you know, an end of the season perennial) after this punk--sun-wise--summer. Next year I hope for more blooms & a better plant by cutting it down early in season.

Rodin scandalized Paris when he unveiled his statue of a man, chin on hand, sitting on a toilet, entitled "The Stinker."

It was altered to meet community standards.

 o
RE: Shining, glistening, going

Heh, heh! Perhaps I should fashion my own garden fig leaf to "veil" my Thinker statue...all in the spirit of community standards!

RE: Shining, glistening, going

It's all in community standards ... are your fellow citizens thinkers or stinkers? ;-)
