The 10+ ft banana plants planted outside got frosted a couple of weeks ago - I took all the babies and smaller ones in. Cut the leaves off and now have the tall lonely stumps - 11 total. Not sure if worth the effort to drag them in for the winter, as I have enough already in pots.
They will overwinter in the basement as stumps out of the ground.

These umbrella pines were 5 inches tall 20 years ago - traded someone some hosta for the cuttings that they had rooted and said would grow - SLOWLY! They were correct. Out of 20 cuttings, have 6 left, with one ailing. They are tough to grow!

This area right off my back porch now has enough noon day shade for hosta. I planted about 30 large clumps - Sagae, Green Fountain, Frances Williams, Blue Angel where you see grass now. Will take the grass out as they grow and mature.

All done dividing for this year - now all that is left is bringing in the tropicals every night it freezes and taking them out when above freezing. And of course, tree/shrub pruning, which is my winter hobby!

Looking at your great pics. and obviously lots of work, just makes me so much more tired than I already am!

But, I know, that it's a *labor of love* for you, Bruce!

Can I ask what kind of shrubs/trees you have in the last pix.? And, when you say 'winter pruning' what does
that entail? And, does it stimulate winter growth?

Crepe myrtle, forsythia, redbuds, crabapples, poplars, oaks, maples, red barberry bush, fruit trees, var. kerria, dogwoods

Yes, they need pruning for growth habit, training and to keep them in check.

Also, I need the fresh air in the winter!

Bruce, what zone are you? I see we have a lot of the same tender perenials, I also have Musa, Brugmansia, and a few others that I winter over in my basement and garage, good luck with them, Jim
