RE : After cleanup in the Spring

Here is another of 'Maple Hosta Bed' after spring cleanup. I found that the more common smaller sized hostas do better in that bed than 'fancy' newer ones. If they start to decline I can easily replace them that way. Their root systems seem to be shorter too so they get mositure faster than the tree does .

Connie, all your posts are wonderful! So pretty! One question-when you make your leaf mulch in the bags, how long to you have to leave them before they become mulch? DH wants to rake tomorrow, so maybe we can just bag and leave them until spring. I love the look of the fallen leaves around the yard and since we have VERY little grass, it isn't a big problem. At least not for us...not sure about the neighbors viewpoint since they are all much more into the "clean up every leaf" look.

Connie,
Gorgeous pictures. Your gardens are beautiful. Normally I'm not a big fan of garden decorations, but I love the statues. They add a peaceful, serene feeling to the beds. Great job!

Cynthia,
We use the mulch mainly for weed control in some of our beds the next year. What nutreints the worms can drag down are about all the ground gets. We also work them into the garden soil and roto till them.

This year we just mulched the leaves on the grass and burned every thing else from fall bed clearing as we have 8 huge bags of mulched leaves left over. We break down the leaves by putting them through a hammer mill/mulcher that we have had for 25 years and it was used when we got it! Some start to break down in the bags over the winter.

We are still able to burn here so that helps a lot. All green stuff from the garden goes into my compost bin all summer and as we are mot good at turning it it takes a while to break down there. I did put 2 inches of compost from the bin on my largest hosta bed 3 years ago and I also use the compost for my plant sale items when I thin out my garden beds every couple of years. I have a screen that I use to brake down compost and them I return the larger pieces to the bin.

Kim,

I took the time to view your garden link. Isn't it neat to see how others garden. I liked your square foot gardening raised beds and your roses plus lots of other stuff. I too collected seeds and did winter sewing the last couple of years but I plan to really scale down this year

You talked about my statues. I mostly collect cheribs . I prefer wingless but do have some of both. They are the poorman's version of marble statues! Three of the ones pictured are statues depecting the four seasons. They are not easy to find as most of the cement statuary is, IMHO, junky looking.

Did you notice the pedistals? They are rejects of cremated remains vaults that I happened to rescue 5 years ago. I have round and square ones. I kept going back to look for more but no luck since then. The lids from them I use to put under potted plants in the garden as well as under some of the statuary I have in front of the vegetable gardens.

Hi Connie,
Seeing your pictures once again is so refreshing,i am SOOOOOOOOOOO,jealous,of your statues, and i love the pedestal yes,you are right about your statues, they are not easy to find.
Having been to your garden,i would like to tell every one, It is so much prettier in person,if you can believe that.
When i was there, there was not a weed to be found, not one i tell you.
I can't wait to see what you have done this year Connie, are we having a walk again?
You are in charge, you do it so well.:0)
I have been busy also, new bed and all.

Thanks for the info Connie. My former MIL had a small leaf shredder that she moved around the yard. She aimed it toward the beds, just dumped leaves in and the shredded leaves blanketed her garden. Wish I had that machine now! I think I will try bagging the leaves and see what happens by spring. I am also on the lookout for a small shredder/mulcher!

BTW, I love your statues, too.

Cynthia
