| Actually, you all probably wouldn't ever get it,as it isn't very common. Ken said Sundance, and this is actually Sundancer,a hosta I found at Lowes about 5 years ago. It grows like a weed, and can take a bit of sun. Phil |
RE: Name this hosta 21

| Hi Phil: A very nice hosta. Could it be that Lowes got the name wrong? Hosta Library shows Sundance, but I can't find Sundancer. As always, the name changes nothing. It still looks great! Steve |

| pretty darn picky phil .. taking bigboxstore tag over me .... waaaahhhhhh i think i will consider it a WIN .... something tells me it was one of walters gardens first hosta.. you know... zillis defined and refined TC at walters ... ken |
Here is a link that might be useful: hmmmm: I WAS RIGHT
RE: Name this hosta 21

| Hmmm...it appears that hosta Sundance is not the same plant as hosta Sundancer. Sundancer is a sport of Fortunei marginata-alba and is imported from the Netherlands. See this link and read Zilis' description of hosta Bersun in The Hostapedia, page 99. |
RE: Name this hosta 21

| Ken,I actually have Sundance,and they are similar,but not the same plant. I know that hosta library doesn't list Sundancer,but I bought 3 of them,and they are a winner,so far! Phil |

| It's interesting that the link Don gave indicates :and an abundance of pale lavender flowers with a light spicy fragrance mid-season, which makes it rather unique for a 'Fortunei' family member, none of the others are fragrant I believe. Can you shed any light on this, Phil, do you recall fragrance from it over the blooming period? Pieter |
RE: Name this hosta 21
| | |
| To tell you the truth,Pieter, I never noticed. Mainly because,I don't smell things the way most people do. I can't smell most things, unless they are really strong. That's just me. I'll have to ask my wife when they bloom next year. I know they never set seed pods. Phil |
RE: Another pic....

| Here is another pic from 2007,showing more of the plant. Phil

Here's what Zilis writes in The Hostapedia, page 99: H. 'Bersun' (L. Berbee) PPAF (SEE H. SUNDANCER) origin: listed as a sport of "Hosta fortunei marginata-alba" (http://patft.uspto.gov, Feb 2, 2008), i.e., 'Fortunei Albomarginata' history: NR; 1990 discovery of Leo Berbee, Lisse, The Netherlands, who applied for a U.S. Plant Patent on February 27, 2004 (ibid) status: sold in the retail nursery trade as HostaSUNDANCER Then, under his entry of H. 'Sundancer', Zilis writes that "...it is more sun-tolerant, more compact, and with lavender flowers that have a light, spicy fragrance...I've seen a few specimens and, overall, it appears very similar to 'Fortunei Albomarginata'. I am doubtful of the "spicy" flower fragrance and I'm not sure how large it will ultimately become. One plant I measured in 2007 reached 12" high by 25" wide with leaves 10 1/2" long by 5" wide (8 vp), but it was not close to maturity." The Hostapedia, page 918 |
