hosta: dead or alive?

Posted by bunster z6IN (My Page) on

Hi,
Moved to a house with many hosta-I had two (one large, one medium size) this past summer lose several leaves mid-summer and by October, the plants had no leaves showing. I would hate to lose either one if there is something that could be done now to save them or should I wait for Spring and see what comes up (p.s. We had mucho rain this past summer)?

They are probably sleeping. Spring will tell!

I agree with yardmom. I have some that are still looking really good and others that faded to nothing a couple of weeks ago. No worries-they'll be back.

Gee, Ken, sounds like you're a 'no-nonsense' kinda guy!! I did know that they die back, but, as I said, these started waning way too EARLY, and my concern was with possible rot and appropriate treatment for same-thanks, guys-guess I will see something (or not) come Spring!!

RE: hosta: dead or alive?

early dormancy is caused by lack of the proper amount of water during the heat of the summer...

if there is a root rot ... its way to late to do anything about it.. since it hits in july .. and if in fact you had it.. the rot is done with whatever it rotted ...

1 to 2 inches of water per week ...

project talk.. does NOT involve adjectives or adverbs ... lol ... all pleas for help with hosta .. ARE PROJECT TALK ... no need for superfluous words ... rotflmbo ...

Bunster, a couple of years ago, my Grand Tiara bit the dust in August. I was sure it had died. First thing the next spring, I bought a new one to replace it. Lo and behold, when I went to plant the new one, there were a bunch of eyes popping out of the ground. I gave my new plant to my daughter, and my original Grand Tiara has been healthy ever since. It has never gone down that early again. I guess it was just tired that year.

Thanks for the encouraging words, Lois-I will remain optimistic til Spring!!!

Early dormancy is also hereditary, as is early appearance in the spring. It is possible that those varieties are early to bed and early to rise.

bunster, Ken is always right, don't fight it, he has a huge wealth of knowledge, and you can pick his brain to your hearts content, Jim
