Marilyn Monroe seems to have chosen a pretty brassy blonde color for her exit this year.

No frost here either, but that may not happen until January if ever. In the meantime I put the ones that had the most green left in them just outside my family room doors. I have been watering all my pots about every 4 or 5 days. Only a few have gone completely dormant.

It would be so much easier with a good old freeze, but alas, that never happens here.

I gave my friend some hostas this summer when she was up here in Iowa for a visit. She lives in Huntsville, AL zone 7b.

I think I gave her Royal Standard, Queen Josephine and Diamond Tiara. I have told her to keep them well watered, which she has.

So, being that time of year, they are going dormant, as is expected. Now she is asking when to tip the pots--as I have instructed that she will need to eventually do. Having no experience with that zone, I am going to need some help with further instructions--I am thinking it is too soon to tip, since they will still need moisture.

Any suggestions as to what to tell her?

Tip them after they go dormant and lose their leaves.

In zone 7b if she has sandy soil, she could just sink the pots into the ground if she has the space. I saw frozen ground for the first time in my life last year. it probably won't happen in Huntsville, so a sunken pot should drain well throughout the winter.
