A few pics from Van Wade's garden...

Here are a few pics from my trip to Wade & Gatton this past spring. Figure someone might find them interesting.

This is a seedling of Dick and Jane Ward, which is currently labelled 'Mona Lisa Child'. Deeply cupped blue-green leaves with huge puckers.

Zitronenfalter, which is very bright yellow in the spring, puts on a good show. It was introduced by Klose and the parentage is unknown. The German name means "lemon butterfly". Zitronenfalter does not seem to be very common in American gardens, even though it's been around for over 20 years.

Unnamed seedling which looks interesting, with dusty blue-green leaves and lots of puckering

Here's another unnamed seedling which we happened to stumble upon. Extremely upright. Bright green shiny leaves stand very erect. We suggested to name it 'Skyscraper Green' because it's going to be a tall one! (In this pic it's already 2-3' high)

Look at the unnamed hosta in the lower part of the pic:

Here's a close-up photo. It's a very contorted and wadded up mass of bluish leaves. Wonder what it will turn out to be.

Van has an entire series of American Indians hostas. Here is a pic of Algonquin, one of the better Am. Indian hostas, IMHO. A very large plant with nicely corrugated leaves.

Thanks for sharing. Some of those may be available for us to buy in a few years.

Is h. 'Zitronenfalter' available at retail, do you know? I like the shape, the leaf shape, and the unusual color and I had never heard of it before. My collector-neighbor has a lot of hostas from the 1970s and 1980s that aren't so popular any more. He is retiring in January, so next summer we are going to make a photo archive and map his hostas. I'll have to put that name on my 'shopping' list!

That tall unnamed seedling looks an awful lot like the weed plantain that's always trying to creep in from a messy yard next door, gone giant (shudder at the thought).

Jim's Hostas listed H. Zitronenfalter for sale last year @ $22.

Thanks! If I don't find one shopping at the neighbor's garden, I will order from Jim's. I found more pictures at some European dealers' sites, and now I really want one!

Don,
Thanks for the pics. I was going to go there this year with the Illinois Prairie Hosta Society but my DW had a class reunion the same weekend and I couldn't find her a new husband in such short notice! I am going this year come HOHW!
