RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

choosing only five hostas is hard to do.I am just trying to see what the favorites are.

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

For me that would be:

'June'
'Blue Mouse Ears'
'Maui Buttercups'
'Raspberry Sorbet'
'Sea Octopus'
'Grand Tiara'
'Ray O Hope'
'Guacamole'
'Dream Queen'
'Striptease'

There, TWO lists of five, combined into one :-)

Welcome! You have asked a very difficult question. It's like choosing between children.

June (in the shade)
Liberty
El Nino
Remember Me
Halcyon

The American Hosta Society takes a poll of its members every year and here is a link to their 2009 list.

Here is a link that might be useful: AHS Popularity List for 2009

RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Great Expectations
Paradigm
Liberty
Montana Aureomarginata
June

Wendy

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Talking about my particular specimens, I would choose in this order:

Sun Power
Golden Sculpture
Journey's End
montana Aureomarginata
Sally and Bob

I couldn't go out and readily buy any of these that are as good as the ones in my yard. I could buy a June or Liberty or Paradigm or even Blue Angel (once bought a 50-incher) that would soon be as good as the ones I have.

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Parhelion
Earth Angel
Abiqua Moonbeam
Sharp Dressed Man
Olive Bailey Langdon

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

June/ Touch of Class
Liberty/Sagae/Magic Fire
Sun Power
Earth Angel
Regal Splendor
Next 5 would be Stained Glass, Paul's Glory, El Nino and Great Expectations.

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

For me they would have to be:

So Sweet
Halcyon
Hanky Panky
Lakeside Shore Master
Patriot

Of course, when I answer this question next week, I will probably give you a slightly different answer.

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

I like mass plantings and can't afford to plant large numbers of the latest-and-greatest, so here's my list of the favorites that match my goals (with a little cheating):

"Patriot" mixed 50/50 with "Fire and Ice"
"Sagae" with a few "Liberty" mixed in
"Gold Standard"
"Blue Ivory"
"June"

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Liberty
Lakeside Cha Cha
On Stage
Brother Stefan
Pee Dee Laughing River

Regal Splendor, Mount Tom and Stitch in Time were runners up and could take over the duties of any of the top 5 that have inappropriate photos discovered.

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

June
Liberty
Paradigm
Abiqua Moonbeam
Striptease
------------------
Sun Power
Ventricosa Aureomarginata
Gold Standard
Fragrant Bouquet
Aristocrat

Add another 15 (or so) and we're getting close.

Paul

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Hmmm,
This year it would have been..
Niagara Falls
Nigrescens
Cinese Dragon Streak
Blizzard.
Calamity Jane
Runners up would be ,,,
Fort Knox
Lucy Vitols
Pinwheel
three sisters
Sugar and Spice

too tough to choose 5 if you are an addict!

Happy Holidays!
Denny

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

June
Rhino Hide
Guardian Angel
Sum of All
Pistache
That's todays list, it could change by tomorrow.

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

The best I can do is 13.

Halcyon, June, Touch of Class, El Niño
Royal Flush
St. Paul & Paul's Glory
Alleghan Fog
Lakeside San Kao
Golden Meadows
Cathedral Windows

Paradigm
Silk Kimono

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

I love these lists because I have to go to the hosta library to check out the ones I don't have. My picks:

Dance with Me
Fragrant Bouquet
Great Expectations
the pairing of Liberty and Sagae
the pairing of Paradigm and Abiqua Moonbeam

but I can't forget Jewel of the Nile.

I selected those because they're the ones I made sure people noticed when they walked my garden. Nance

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Halcyon
Guacamole
Olive Baily Langdon
Krossa Regal
Captain Kirk

Easy to keep it at 5 since more than half of my collection was new this year and has not yet had a chance to woo me.

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

This is my answer today:
Golden Meadows
June
Liberty (A beautiful Hosta and a great way to remember Papou)
Montana Aureomarginata
plantaginea (The flowers are incredible)

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Hard to do with so many varities. Here goes;
Abiqua Moonbeam

Jack Of Diamonds
Zounds
Jerry

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Niagra Falls
Guardian Angel
Leading Lady
Lakeside Sparkle Plenty
Blue Angel
Invincible

...and so many more!

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Mmmmmmm...Not based on whether they are easily replaced or not, but on what I enjoy most.

June
montana Aureomarginata
Striptease
Whirlwind
Blue Mouse Ears

I'll hold it to five...reluctantly.

tj

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Millinium
Golden Meadows
Squash Casserole
Obsession/ Rainbow's End
Earth Angel
Ebb Tide
El Nino/First Frost
Old Glory
OBL
Sorry, I could only cut it to around 10.
If Adorable is as pretty this year as last, it will be in my top favorites. I also have high hopes for Regal Supreme.

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Sum And Substance
Sagae
Olive Bailey Langdon
Abiqua Drinking Gourd
June
Regal Splendor
Gold Standard

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Olive Bailey Langdon
Earth Angel
Mighty Mouse
Wolverine
Essence of Summer (great fragrance earlier than the others and blooms in pretty deep shade)

I'd also have to take my Winsome for sentimental reasons - a rabbit ate it to the ground the first day planted, but Winsome came back then and has every year since.

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

This is not easy. I think I would take the biggest ones - which changes from year to year depending upon which gardens the voles are nibbling in. Right now:

Strip Tease
Dawn's Early Light
Cutting Edge
Alex Summers
Dancing Queen
Gunther's Prize
Blue Lightening

However this will never happen because I promised my hosta that I would take them all with me if I move.

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Five are not enough :
Frances Williams
Sum & Substance
Brother Stefan
Blue Umbrellas
Liberty
montana Aureomarginata or Atlantis
Queen of the Sea

Bernd

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Samual Blue
Atlantis
Blue Mouse Ears Supreme
Empress Wu
Ice Age Trail

plus about 200 others.

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Journey's End
Paul's Glory
sieboldiana Elegans
Striptease
Royal Standard

Or would it be...

Beverly

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

royal tapestry (based on growing in a pot)
spartacus (based on growing in a pot)
liberty
lakeside cindy cee (based on growing in a pot)
restless sea (based on growing in a pot)

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

I have too many young-uns! So ask again next winter.
-Guacamole
-Serendipiry
-Old Glory
-August Moon
-Sagae
-I have a solid green NOID that I just think is wonderful. It was wrongly ID'd as Invincible at the nursery. It has similar qualities but no way is it near identical. It forms a beautifully dense mound almosst 6 feet across, has around 4 to 4 1/2 feet long arching scapes and is slug-proof. For a solid green with no puckering or wavy edges or such, it must be good to make this list. lol

Les

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

so nice to be talking hosta again

Niagra Falls
Touch of Class
Kiwi Full Monty
Independence
Atlantis

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

Favorites probably are hostas the grow really well in your garden. My five would be:

Paradigm
Halcyon and its derivatives (I agree with thisismelissa)
Captain Kirk
Alex Summers
Striptease

But ask me again in June and the list may be completely different.

the other Steve

 o
RE: what would be your top five hostas in your garden?

I would have to say...
Montana aureomarginata-because it is the first one up and brilliantly colored in spring

Northern exposure due to its size and specimen quality in my garden

June due to the nice color variation and strong growth habit

Elegans for size, texture and beautiful blue color

Stained glass because it is the last to go in fall and looks great all season from start to finish

Many other favorites but trying to play by the rules
