Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Don't ask me why, but a couple of days ago this thought popped into my mind, and I wondered what musical instruments different HT folks might play. I dismissed the thought, but just now I read the posts about "whistling" and decided to ask who plays what here. I don't play any musical instruments and have almost zero range for singing. I CAN whistle (not very well) but that's it. I made sure my kids took piano lessons. One stuck with it, the other had better things to do.

Tell us, do you play or sing? Did you play in your school band or orchestra? Do you play or sing now, and if so, where? Community group, your own band, etc?

I don't play, but spending a small fortune on my 3 kids. Piano, flute and violin. The boys have picked up guitar on their own.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Piano, Glockenspiel, and Drums.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

I sang in choir all through school and university. Was sent for the usual piano lessons, but always preferred woodwinds - played recorder in my junior school band and later bought a flute for my own amusement.

I currently play snare drum in a competition bagpipe band and formerly played tenor.

 o

Even as a kid I carried a Glock! (in marching band, my freshman year) :-)

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

I play most instruments...I even build my own...

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Maxter, those are amazing! Gorgeous work.

For me, piano, cello, drum, guitar, and Irish tin whistle. For several years I made my living off playing guitar and singing, and teaching guitar lessons.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Played trumpet in the HS marching band but put it away after graduating and haven't played an instrument in years. I regret not learning a stringed instrument. If I had the inclination today, I'd probably play old timey music.

I would sell my left patootie to be able to play any instrument. I whistle with my lips, but have a secret inner yearning to be able to do it with my fingers. Then I would be the queen of cool.
But I sing very well and do it (some say too) often. Both of my sisters play and one of them made her living at it for a bit. I envy and am fascinated by anyone who can pick up something, practice it and get it right, and then make amazing music. As with one of the other threads about how interesting we all really are in our other lives, I'm mighty impressed by you folks!

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Batya,

I would sell my right patootie to be able to play an instrument. I can't even read music. :o(
My son has picked up the drums on his own and the youngest is excelling at violin.

I sing in my car.

The guitars!!!! So amazing! My ex taught himself to play the guitar and many other instruments. My talents lay elsewhere.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

We, my sister and I, sang all the time as children.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Piano, guitar and singing in choir (soprano). I still have my guitar and wish I had more time to play it (I would have to get my calluses back again!)

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Looks like some of you should take some music lessons? You only live once, so don't wish, just go for it! :o)

Music is something that can always be shared for fun. If you can play a musical instrument at a family gathering, so much the better.

If you have no money, pick up a tin whistle on line for under $10 and go to youtube and follow the free lessons there. Tin whistle would be really fun to do with your child or grandchild. I'll bet you'll laugh and hug a lot.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

I learned to play the flute in 7th grade. Piccolo in high school. I was also in the 313th Army Reserve Band for several years.

I always wanted to learn to play the guitar and bought one, but didn't get too far. Blamed it on being left handed.

 o
No excuse!

Some of the very best guitar players are lefties.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Piano; the last five years has been the longest period of time I haven't regularly played. On my bucket list (which I'm making out these last few months) is the Clara Schumann Concerto in a minor that I began about seven years ago.

I doubt I get the orchestra but a second piano will suffice.
Can't sing a note.

There are obviously some talented people on this forum.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Learned drums in High School in Virginia. Years later in England joined the British Army as a bandsman - mounted drummer in the Household Cavalry. Moonlighted in jazz and dance bands all over London's West End. As a civilian toured England and Europe with jazz bands, rock bands and theatre/dance companies playing drums, keyboards, guitar, bass. Pickled my liver, fried my brains, had my life saved by that socialist Health Service, grew old, grew roses, learned that gardening is as great an art form as any other, just quieter.

Best wishes
Jon

RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

I took some piano lessons as a kid but my love was for the organ. Dad was adamant against that possibly thinking Hammond a go-go like in the mall organ stores... LOL ...
Well I got an organ when I moved out into my first apartment. it was easier to move than a piano anayways. I still play the organ but mainly classical type organ music. And it's a cheap hobby nowadays, all those expensive organs that cost $10,000 - $15,000 25 years ago are free now because nobody really wants them anymore.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Alas I can neither play an instrument, nor sing at all. I'm too embarrased to even sing Happy Birthday out loud. I would dearly love to be able to sing, first, and play an instrument, second.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

I play my ukulele badly, can't whistle and sing off key... Those are BEAUTIFUL guitars!

RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Started with piano, then played drums for about 12 years (high school band and afterwards). Dad was in the Glen Miller Orchestra (after Glen). He also played with Woody Herman and Si Zentner, and was trumpet and relief conductor for the Folies Bergere at the Tropicana in Las Vegas. My son's father and his family are also musically inclined. DS and his Dad now work in the lighting and stage crew industry in the DFW area. DS also has two bands that play on a regular basis around the DFW area. My Aunt was a music teacher for probably 30 or more years. I guess I'd have to say-"yes, we play musical instruments" :)

Sure you don't want to run for president? :-)

Very nice pics.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

I didn't know Ovation made guitars when that dress was popular. LOL!

Thanks for the compliments. Those pictures are of the same guitar. The top two show the front and back, the middle two show the scalloped fretboard, and the bottom one is a picture of the full guitar. It is all flame maple with two cherry strips for strength. 17.5 degree tilted headstock for maximum sustain. Scalloped fretboard. Neck thruogh body for maximum sustain...yes, it sustains! 14 inch radius on the fretboard. Bookmatched top. The best guitar I've ever played. I call it "Aladdin's Lamp" and if you rub it three times...a genie will appear...guaranteed. (note the shape of the headstock). I salvaged the lumber from an old piano that was given away on craig's list.

That's me with the red guitar in the early 80's in my first band on a small, dirty little stage with our clean white banner getting soiled on their walls...

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Thanks, Bill. :o)

Not much of a lady charmer, are you Maxter?

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Wow, what an interesting and talented bunch. Also, your facial/physical features match well with your personalities as expressed on this board :^P Anyway, I play a little piano and flute (long time ago), sing in the car and in the shower, but rather listen to the birds sing in the garden.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Piano, guitar, harp and pipe organ

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

oceanna-I was going to post something similar, but decided it was your call. I think you look beautiful.

maxter-there's a date stamp on your pic that says 06/03/2008. Uh, What?

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Jon, loved your post. I'll bet you have some neat stories to tell! You've got quite a musical past.

Akrogirl, a competition bagpipe band, how neat! Do you march and put on shows? I've been wanting to see if there's some celtic music folks around here, just something casual where people get together to jam.

Bumblebee and Allison... I think those of you who have played flute might have some fun with a tin whistle. I hear you about the birds in the garden, Bee. I've got birds in the house to listen to as well.

Littleone, where did you play pipe organ, in church? Those things are daunting. My mom was a very accomplished pianist and also played harp, and she played the organ in church. Not guitar, though. You're quite versatile.

Bill, how did you ever start playing Glockenspiel?

Vwtx, thank you for your kind words.

JG, I hear you about the callouses! Many a time I've had very sore guitar fingers. Owie, owie, owie! I loaned my guitar to my son and tried to show him a few things a few months ago. I just brought it back (need to get it out of the car). Sadly, he gave up on it. Just didn't get around to practicing.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

sing in the car and in the shower

The car is pretty much the only place I sing, and this is usually the kind of stuff I like to sing....

RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Classical piano. My parents bought a Chickering grand for me, in the hope that I would be another Myra Hess. Alas, I lacked the right hand shape and also the sitzfleisch. But I loved playing. Now my hands can no longer manage Chopin's speed and Rachmaninoff's chords.

I sang alto in my high school choir. My best friend had a beautiful soprano voice. We did an occasional church gig around Chicago, with me accompanying her at the keyboard.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

I am in awe of every one of you. And thanks for sharing pictures!

Oceanna, aside from being talented and beautiful, I'm guessing you don't just live in Washington. You're a Washington native. That looks like the Washington sky I grew up under.

Bill and Maxter...why am I not surprised to see what you looked like and what you were doing in your younger years?

Very cool photos, everyone! What a talented bunch!

Me, I can plunk out a few tunes on a piano, but nothing to write home about... my Mom was adamant that I take piano lessons way back when, though not much of it stuck.

I can blow the harp a little, but again, not anything that you'd call worthy...

I have always wanted to learn the guitar, and am a lefty... but I've never gotten around to learning.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

I started out on recorder, then added flute and piano when I was a kid. I also love to sing.
I do not play as much as I or my DH would like. Any time we have friends over, who do play, we try to do some jamming. Attached is a little video from last Dec when we tried that little piece first time with my friend.

RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Long neck banjo, guitar, and blues harmonica before the paralysis.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Another harmonica player but had trouble bending notes so I never made it big, but I can play Dixie big time...

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Nikoleta, thank you. I was born in WA, but raised in La Jolla. Yep, that's the sky around here 9 months of the year. Although yesterday was beautifully sunny. How long did you live here?

Punamy, yet another talent to add to your already-amazing talents! That was lovely. You never cease to impress me with all that you can do, girl (I suspect most here don't know what those of us on home dec know about you). Who is that accompanying you, is that your DH, or son? I wish you hadn't hidden so well from the camera. And how does one attach a video directly by link here?

David, paralysis? I'm so sorry to hear that. :(

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument??

Oceanna: just realized my earlier response did not go through :-(

Yes, the band does play shows from time to time, though we tend to play more parades and memorial services etc. when not competing at the various Highland Games. We have even played at Rod Stewart concerts in the past. He liked to have a local bagpipe band play for the audience before the concert started.

For the past couple of weeks, we have been busy playing at graduation ceremonies for the various local universities - lots of hurry up and wait, lol. DH and I even got to play for our own MBA graduation a few years ago, which was pretty cool.

You mentioned celtic music - I was wondering about that from your costume in the photo :-) If you have any pipe bands or Scottish Country Dance groups nearby, I bet someone would be able to help you out and put you in touch with some fellow musicians.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Thanks Oceanna. The guy on guitar is my oldest son's best friend. Usually he plays violin and I accompany him on piano, but now he is learning to play guitar, so this was our very first attempt on flute and guitar, not bad for first try, if I may say so myself :)
and as linking the video, I just attached the link to the video file on our web server, the browser does the rest.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Oceanna,
I was born and raised in Washington. After DH graduated from UW, we moved to Oregon. That pic sure reminded me of Seattle!

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Bill, how did you ever start playing Glockenspiel?

I grew up playing the piano, as did the rest of my sisters and brother, and although I love music, I couldn't stand piano, as it was force fed to me from about the age of 6 (funny thing is now I miss it). My cousin was an all state sax player (and even to this day, makes his living playing in a blues band), and he started teaching me how to play the sax. When I got into high school, I signed up for freshman band (which, where I went to school, was where they teach you to play new instruments) to formally learn how to play the sax. First day of school, I got that bubble burst, though. We were each asked what it was we were interested in. I told the band director sax (yes, with an "A"), and he immediately said he had enough sax players choose something else. My second choice was drums, and of course, he already had enough drummers, too, but he told me if I was interested, he DID need a couple of glock players, so that's how I got involved with the glockenspiel. Right after Christmas break that year, he told us one fine day that he wanted each of us to also learn a second instrument. At that point, I told him drums or nothing. Well, it just so happened that there was one other guy learning to play the glock, and he'd been playing drums for years, but was having a hard time picking up on how to play the bells (glock), so the idea was that we were going to teach each other how to play both instruments. He gave me one lesson on how to play a drum roll, and from there, I learned myself (this kid was a waste of time). I taught myself all the basic rudiments, and then when my grandfather bought me my first drumset (the one in the picture-- much to my parents' chagrin-- ), I taught myself by listening to songs on the radio and learning to imitate them. Even to this day, I love playing to music. My wife got me a practice pad and sticks last year, and now that we have our own place, I intend to get another drumset this summer and get back into it.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Oceanna;
Very beautiful and dare I say sexy pics.

What kind of music do you play or listen to now?

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Sure took 'em a long time to move this thread over to Conversations.

Akro, it sounds like you've had a lot of fun with that. Rod Stewart? Wow. Thanks for the tip about the bands.

Punamy, your flute playing is just lovely. That was his first time? He did great!

Nikoleta, well, Portland's not all that different, is it? Do you miss Seattle?

Bill, some of those stretches are awfully hard for a child's smaller hands. My mom taught piano so we all learned too. Sounds like you came from a very musical family. Interesting about how you ended up with the glock! That's exactly how I ended up playing tenor drum in the marching band - lol. Only did that for a short time, so I was never a real drummer, like you. I her ya on how you learned to play drums, as I taught myself to play guitar the same way, well, and learned to read tablature later.

Thanks, Heri! I don't do much any more. That's why I got the tin whistle, and I just mess around with it. But I would love to go hang out with some Irish music folks that just informally jam and see if I can get brave enough to play with them in time. Just a thought.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

I was gardening Sunday and at one end of the house I heard my daughter (sitting by her window) playing a delightful tune on the flute. When at the other end of the house I heard my son on the violin. It was very pleasant. Worth every penny.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Sounds like you came from a very musical family.

Very much so. It started with my grandfather who sang with the NY Metropolitan Opera, and taught all HIS kids to play piano. I mentioned my cousin who still plays sax. His sister is a high school music teacher in Phoenix. As for immediate family, I told you my instruments. In addition to piano, my oldest sister played guitar and flute, my second oldest sister, just the piano, but she's also a music teacher, as well as giving private piano lessons and a choir accompanist, my second youngest sister played flute, and both my youngest sister and my brother also played guitar, bass, and drums. Any time we'd have a family get-together when we were kids-- holidays, birthdays, whatever-- you could bet there'd be a jam session of sorts.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

No one in my family has any musical talent, me included. But I never let that stop me. My philosophy of life is to get in the game, even if you aren’t the best on the field. So I learned to play a chord or two and sing a few melodies. I call it fake music. Kinda of like the ol’ fake books, simplified to the extreme. It wouldn’t fool a real musician.

I was a little bit disappointed that more of you didn’t take punamytsike’s lead and post some of what you do. Her selection, Autumn Leaves was a favorite of mine as a child. Below is a link where I do my fake style on it. Probably not musically correct, but the way I remember it. I don’t have the sheet music and it wouldn’t help me if I did.

Here is a link that might be useful: Autumn Leaves

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

Well, I'm mostly a lurker in HT, but I'll bring the thread back around.

I play French horn and a little trumpet and baritone. I've also learned to drum over the last few years. DH plays sax -- loves bari but mostly plays tenor. We play in community bands and in a big band some friends started a few years ago. I volunteered to play last chair trumpet, but they really needed a drummer, so I learned. I LOVE drumming. I don't like that it dictates your choice of automobile, and that you are always the first to the gig and the last out, but I love it nonetheless.

I got a cello for Christmas last year because I just adore the cello. But I haven't managed to make the time to get lessons. That is my new years' resolution.

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

I know this is an old thread but I thought I should revive it. I've been playing the guitar since I was in 5th grade. I got this baby for a bargain, it's a USA made Leo Fender and George Fullerton 2000 G&L Legacy Stratocaster. New they cost around $1,200 but I got a great deal for a used one for $550!! Beautiful instrument!

 o
RE: Who Plays a Musical Instrument?

The harmonica, but no pics as I usually play in the noodles...
