Our State Health department licenses doctors. Don't know if they offer any data.

Thanks, I searched extensively and could not locate any "bad" data on the doctor in question. He's a general surgeon that will be preforming a hernia operation on me next week. I've been a bad boy and have put this off since last summer (too busy until now). I hear that Dec is the better month of the year to have surgery done as most people put it off (if possible) until after the holidaze. Also got it scheduled midweek as that's supposed to be the better time frame of doctor alertness, ha, we'll see.

Not exactly a "Doctor's Watchdog" but the AMA gives some basic info on their members. AMA. I was gonna have my knee done by a guy until I looked him up on that site and found out he had graduated from and done his residency in some Mexican backwater. Prolly wouldn't have bothered me had he been Mexican but a Jew from Great Neck going all the way to Mexico to get licenced? Seemed fishy.

Hi Socks, yes, had hernia repair and mesh installed 2 weeks ago and have been recovering at home. It was a pretty big repair job, the mesh measured ~2"x6" so I shouldn't have any problems on that side again. The worse part is getting used to the pain as the mesh slowly becomes accepted by my tissues. I'm getting more "flexible" with each day now. I may return to work next week after Xmas and hope to be in full gardening swing by Spring.

Glad to hear your surgery went well. Be sure to keep up with those exercises. Slacking off really does make the healing slow down. I remember watching Phil Donahue years ago(I know, it was a lo-o-og time ago)when he had a guest on who had compiled a list of Doctors and their success and failure rates as well as their ranking in school, what schools attended, specialty and so forth. It contained some pretty shocking information such as doctors practicing outside of their specialty, still practicing without a license, going state to state when a license was revoked, malpractice suits and more. I wonder if he kept it up to date? Such info in a database would shake the medical world. Of course it would only be as good as the upkeep. Maybe you should put this on the discussions side. Thanks Sleepless! Right now it's been almost 6 weeks since the surgery and I feel great, almost like there was no hernia nor surgery involved and I'm quite lucky and happy about that. As for exercising, I've taken advantage of the warm spell here and have been doing some early garden prepping for Spring. On a related health care thread on the other side I promised to return to give the final $$$ amounts, I'll try to locate that old thread but in case I can't : Surgery ~ $16,500 Other asst costs = $2,500 But thanks to my insurance, my total bill was ~$300 |

My husband was diagnosed with protstate cancer three years ago by a Chicago suburban doc. He is a very good doc but....when I heard the diagnosis, I said "We must be proactive". I called every doc I knew and said "If this was you or your father, who would you go to?". Out of five responses, four gave me the same name. We chose that doc and after three years, all is fine. Always, do the research!

Vgkg, October '05 a stray gust of wind caught my car door while I was putting a flower pot in the car. At last count, the bill from the hospital, not counting doctor's fees and prescriptions, was in excess of $100,000.00. At least I'm not screaming about the injury anymore. Sleepless

I have been on this site www.injuryalliance.com They have some stats there on medical malpractice that might answer some of your questions. It talks about the number of reported cases per year, number of deaths, the types of medical malpractices and what you can do about it. They can also get you a medical malpractice lawyer if need be or just answer any other questions you may have, the great part is, they can do this for you for FREE.

vgkg, glad to hear things are getting better. I was talking to someone the other day and they were telling me about the number of people treating patients that aren't even doctors, its unbelievable!!! Did you get a chance to check out the Injury Alliance website? What did you think about it?

Thanks Mama & Brad for your concerns and info, Sorry to say that my malfunctioning webtv unit allows me only ~15 minutes of up time before it fades out (faulty chip?) so I'll have to wait until we upgrade to a laptop in order to check those out in depth. I am pleased with my hernia surgeon and will keep him if another one pops up.

Try Angie's List. People review doctors on there too.

Sweeby, sorry for the delay in replying, but I keep forgetting about this side! I'm so glad it was helpful. vgkg, hope your web-tv issues are solved soon. It must be frustrating. |
