| Has anyone received in the mail a Public Hearing Notification? I have had numerous occasions of very loud knocking on my door in the past week and I found out later it was a Rep from ACS but since it was at night I did not go to the door. I am afraid to open this official government looking envelope and wonder if it is from ACS. Scared!!! It says expedited delivery-dated information-tracking number*****. If anyone has received one, please let me know. Member who does not post much but no stranger to KT. |

| I have not received one of these but my understanding is that it's merely another census instrument that helps communities plan its services, etc. I am not sure why you are frightened by a piece of mail from the government or from a local government agency. But if it bothers you, throw it in the recycle bin. |
| Obviously I could throw it in the recycle bin without going to the trouble of trying to acquire information. Obviously you are not an older woman living alone who has had someone pounding on their front door for as long as 20 minutes at night. I am hoping for someone who knows what I am saying to answer my question. Thanks anyway. |
| It looks like you can respond online - Maybe then put a note on the door saying you responded online and they'll go away. I get the USDA Farm census every other year, and I filled mine out online. Some time in March or so, they'll call and ask if I've filled and sent it in, they seem to hire special people who don't know how to check this by themselves. |
Here is a link that might be useful: link to their web page
| Here's a link, which you may already have seen. I have not received this, nor heard about it. I would think the Census Bureau would have done a better job with PR, rather than have people "sneak up" on citizens and bang on their door. I certainly do not answer my door. If anyone wants to talk to me, they would have to call and make an appointment. Here is a link to a page that says you can answer these questions online. If you feel intimidated, please lodge a complaint. An "over-enthusiastic" employee does them no good. |

| Throw the unwanted mail in the wastebasket, and the next time someone bangs on your door for 20 minutes at night, call the police and say someone is trying to break down your front door. And get an outdoor light by your door so you can see who is out there. Advice from an older woman named Kate |
| Thanks everyone for the links and advice. I do have a light on my porch but a large glass window on my front door in the foyer covered in a lace curtain. If I look out, I will be seen. I do plan to call police next time. My question today was about the official looking envelope I received today. I was afraid I was in trouble for not answering the door to the ACS Rep. He had left a note last time saying my "Deadline was up". ?? I did open the envelope and it was an advertisement for hearing aids. Tracking number-expedited deliver bla bla and it was a GD advertisement. Guess my nerves are just shot this week. Sorry to bother ya'll. LOL |

| We received a letter a couple of weeks ago with a website address to fill out the survey online. It also stated that if we failed to comply they would send a hard copy, which they did. We filled out the portions we were comfortable giving out the information and put declined in some questions due to the safety issues. There is no way we would tell the government what time we went to work. How many people advertise when they are not going to be home. Supposedly they can fine you up to $5000 for not filling out the survey, but they state on their website that they are not an enforcement agency. I would call the police if they knock on your door again for 20 minutes and would file a complaint with the Census Bureau. |
| Besides calling the cops, other options next time they come knocking - Place a sign on the door stating : Yell thru the door "I'm not deaf, I hear you knocking but you can't come in." |
| maggie, I am also an older woman but it's true I haven't had anyone knocking on my door for 20 minutes. However, i was and remain puzzled by your fear at opening a government document. Actually I get junk like the hearing aid ad all the time. Waste of paper and postage. |
| My fear would be that the last time the Rep. pounded on my door for 20 minutes, he wrote a note saying my "Deadline was Up". That made me nervous and suddenly a strange letter shows up and I figure that now I am being called in for not responding to the Rep of the ACS. I don't know how I can make that any clearer. Have you ever received the ACS 28 page form? But, never mind. I appreciate your interest albeit misguided. |
| Instead of becoming paranoid in fear that the government has come to get you and you are going to be "disappeared" or something like that (you've been watching too many movies, woman!), be realistic and just label the guy for what he was: an obnoxious jerk. It's that simple, really. We are trying to reassure you that the government is NOT out to get you, no matter what that obnoxious jerk says. He gets paid for every filled out form he obtains, so he was trying to pressure you into filling out the form. Call the Census Bureau and complain loudly about the obnoxious jerk of an employee. He does NOT represent the government. He's just hustling for an extra buck. Kate |

| From WiseGEEK: "the Census Bureau has no authority to enforce the laws that require the ACS be answered. The Census Bureau can press formal charges for non-compliance, but this is somewhat impractical given the number of forms that are not returned, or that are returned incomplete. A lawsuit would likely draw media attention and a public outcry that would very probably bring an end to the survey or end mandatory compliance. As of early 2007, no legal action has been taken against anyone for refusing to answer the ACS." 2% of the population (living in cities with a pop. over 20,000) get these. If you got one recently, you won't get another for 5 years - maybe never again if you're lucky. To avoid all this, simply fill it out - leaving blank anything you feel is too invasive, and mail it back. Then no one will be pounding on your door or making phone calls. It's a survey, not a terroristic threat. I live alone and never answer my door if I'm not expecting someone either. |

| I would call the police if I were fearful, especially if someone pounded on my door for even five full minutes. That is not normal, to pound on someone's door for a prolonged period of time, I would not tolerate it. |
| Maggie, I am not "misguided" and I do understand your concern. I am sorry that I have caused you to be upset with my comments. |
| Well first of all I have never heard of this form and if it looked like "junk mail" in my home it probably got junked. Secondly I am alone in the evenings and if you come knocking on my door and I do not answer and you persist "under" five minutes I am on the phone to the local cops, who get here quicker than someone can get out. I know, I have called them in the past and it is remarkable the response time in my "hood", the taxes I pay are well worth the service I receive. I am sorry you were frightened, and I would definitely lodge a LOUD complaint with whoever is responsible for this nitwit pounding on doors at night. |

| Speaking of paranoia about the government "coming to get you", I just had a facebook friend post this bit of propaganda that must be making the rounds. She's an ex co-worker from the US and most certainly a staunch Republican. She is re-posting this from other facebook people and she (and her facebook friends) are completely convinced this is all true. They are discussing it right now and all I can do is shake my head. TIME TO ACT INSTEAD OF REACT... OBAMA HIT MEN ARE GOING ACROSS THE COUNTRY... BE CAREFUL... BE AWARE A new report updating their 4 January "urgent action" memorandum to President Putin circulating in the Kremlin, today, states that the "death squads" unleashed upon America by President Obama have claimed their first two victims and warns that "another massacre" in the United States is "much nearer than first believed." |

| Kee-rap from Gunny G's American Blogger Weblog Email. What we need are Govt. "Hug Squads" to ward off the VIPER teams hiding in trees - that's pretty much all there is around location #6. Maybe they'll go around knocking on doors of fishing shacks on 9000 or so of our 10,000 lakes. A grim Federal Security Forces (FSB) "urgent action" memorandum prepared for President Putin is warning that United States President Barack Obama has ordered at least 800 highly trained "death squad" units to disperse throughout his country in preparation for what Russian intelligence analysts are predicting to be a series of high-profile killings of dissident Americans set to begin as soon as February 22nd. Jeez, not much time. How can anyone believe such bushwa?? |
| How can anyone believe it? You must have missed the latest "paranoia gun thread" bout' Obama coming to get their guns. HG probably a couple of posters right here at HT nodding their heads and "spreading the word" :) |

| But they are discussing it like it's REAL... Do you guys understand how batsh** crazy this sounds? It's not normal! How can this be a serious political discussion? I'm just not getting this. It's surreal. |
| Ham, I responded to your dispair accidently in the assisted suicide thread, too lazy to re-touch the whole thing to this thread. I agree....it's always been bash***crazy. However, if you connect the dots, you see where the birth of all this began....at the first Presidential win. Same road traveled with the same minds, just on down that road a piece. There is a ,sick need for all this, it's based on outrage and hate and fear. IMO |

| The Onion is going to have to try harder; no one would believe that Michelle Obama would allow that sofa in her home. Regarding the crazed nonsense posted above, I found the original source here: What Does It Mean?. In searching for information on Sorcha Faal, reported as the author, I came across a truly depressing collection of sites and writing styles (why is it that the crazier the narrative the more the author is in desperate need of a spell checker). Sorcha Faal supposedly presents herself as a Russian female, perhaps a scientist, but is most likely David Booth - who may be a CIA disinformation specialist, or a Mossad agent. Other theories involve an Ashkenazi cabal of Jewish women dating to the Middle Ages, associations with Alex Jones, and super-human powers to mess with the computers of anyone who tries to reveal the real identity of Sorcha Faal (anagram of "of Rachal"). We do have a problem with out-of-control paranoia in this country, and some of its purest expressions can be found on the internet. |

| "A 4 January "urgent action" memorandum to President Putin circulating in the Kremlin, today, states that the "death squads" unleashed upon America by President Obama etc etc...." So Russian spies beat Fox newz to this earth shattering story? Sounds like Sarah Palin is still hot under the collar about her movie's high praise, for revenge she's just re-inventing her "death panels" fantasyland.

| "When the sh*t goes down, man, the militia is all you can rely on," said Obama, who sources confirmed has formed a loose affiliation of local gun owners that meets on weekends to conduct what they call "training exercises" in the Rose Garden." The first thing someone should get in their sights is that sofa - could be a bullet proof weave though... like the early polyester pantsuits which were resistant to all manner of biological damage such as mold and mildew, but not the common SNAG. |

| Clearly my post has been high-jacked and turned into something it was not meant to be. Welcome to Hot Topics, where there is no commandment that "Thou shalt only discuss the OP" and most threads evolve as time passes. You said in a couple different posts above that the envelope turned out to be an advertisement and "Sorry to bother ya'll" and "Never mind". So, in spite of what you said, you wanted us to continue talking about your nervousness? I'm just not sure I understand why you're upset that the conversation had been hi-jacked if you already told us it was a false alarm, nevermind, sorry to bother you. |
| Who would wear a skirt and cardigan made of such ugly material Demi, what do you mean? |
| Oh hell Mylab it is obvious what Demi meant, lets not take another trip down that road, it takes up too many threads as it is. Read what she said, it is very clear. And she has the right to say it and for me and anyone else to ignore and or go to "150" arguing back and forth. Enough |
| While I know we'd prefer to keep speech free, even on the internet, isn't this kind of thing bordering on inciting a public panic? Rather like yelling FIRE in a crowded theater? I think so. What I want to know is... where did the ability to think rationally and clearly with common sense go? How does anyone take what's written on the internet at face value? Surreal doesn't begin to cover it. |
| Just wanted clarification so nobody was mentally putting words in her mouth, OM, but your point is taken. Jodi, the problem with the " fire" thing is that anyone on the opposing side of a hot political subject would think that rule could apply. Though these irrational, fearful and angry people exist and do have the right to say what they are, I don't see where what they are saying will so rouse the general public as to cause the possibility of public panic. Everyone isn't that stupid. Not most, not even a lot when you consider the population of this country. If anyone would have fallen into that category it would be that nutty " religious" family who gathers at funerals to spew God based hate. And society found a way to deal with them effectively, too, as far as I can see. Beat them at their own game. Agree/disagree? |
| In my mind, there's the truth, or facts, what really happened or is happening... and then there's complete and utter fallacy, misinformation, illogical thought and lack of common sense. The twain exist at opposite ends of a spectrum, along with the ability to tell them apart. Why take advantage of the public's ignorance and throw even a small percentage into a panic of illogical proportion? I don't see this sort of thing as two ends of a political discussion. I see it as truth versus complete and utter lies. |
